'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackman

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers the "Steel" episode of the Twilight Zone.

If anyone's interested, the original short story can be found in DUEL: TERROR STORIES by Richard Matheson.

(Edited by--ahem--me.)

Wow a RARE Twilight zone remake!

Hmm with an October release looks like Touchstone and the distributor Dreamworks didn't think so or else it would have gotten a August 2011 release...

Why would boxing be outlawed?

sigh...I suppose it is best not to question these things.

Maybe because it's seen as too brutal and dangerous, it's certainly not the first time that's been considered.

But man's oldest hobby is watching other men kick the shit out of each other. The popularity in the sport of boxing has very little to actually do with the "sport."

Oh. And the movie just looks like the run-of-the-mill garbage Disney continues to churn out these days.

People have enjoyed drinking alcohol for most of human history, but the USA actually tried banning it during Prohibition. And people are always trying to crack down on prostitution, pornography, fireworks, comic books, or whatever. There will always be reformers and politicians trying to prohibit what they see as popular vices.

Under the right conditions, perhaps after a couple of high-profile tragedies, I can see some sort of anti-violence movement banning boxing as "barbaric" . . . especially when humanoid robots offer a "safer and saner" alternative.

Certainly, as scifi concepts go, it's no less plausible than future societies banning books, training apes as servants, executing everyone over the age of 21, or turning people into Soylent Green . . . .

I'm interested in this movie... but I would never, ever watch it if Hugh Jackman wasn't in it.

The new trailer has me a lot more interested in the film than the first teaser. I think it will be silly fun. It's a bit less grim (from all appearances so far) than the TZ ep was.

If they don't squeeze in a "rock'em sock'em" reference, it will be a missed opportunity. :D

FYI: Syfy is rerunning the original TWILIGHT ZONE version very early Saturday morning.

Interesting how the American trailer paints it as "Rocky with robots" while the Japanese is emphasizing the "Boy and his robot" angle, with overtones of the dad, kid and robot forming an unconventional nuclear family. Honestly, I like the Japanese version better since it's more unexpected.

This is why I'd like to see some foreign trailers in HD of the Star Trek I-X feature films included on the next Blu-ray double dip.
