Real-life Kobayashi Maru - When did you have to "change the conditions of the test"?

Molyfar

Lieutenant
Newbie
Kirk's famous line: "I changed the conditions of the test."

But most of life you can't.

We all have a Kobayashi Maru. A situation where there was no good option, only bad and worse. No-win.

Mine wasn't work. It was family.

Many years ago I had two people I love dearly who both needed me in different places at the same time. Both were serious. Helping one meant letting the other down. There was no clever third option, no way to reprogram the simulator.

I had to choose who to disappoint. And then live with that choice and try to make it up to them afterwards.

I think about that when I watch the test now. I understand why Starfleet runs it. It's not about winning. It's about learning that sometimes you do everything right and you still lose someone, and you still have to stay in the chair for the next call.

That's my Maru.

What was yours? Did you take the loss, pick the least-bad option, or did you find a way to change the conditions?
