Re-Watching VOY

I already reviewed "Nemesis" (VOY) two months ago. so we're skipping ahead to "Revulsion". This means the VOY Season is one episode ahead of the DS9 Season, but it'll even out next week when I watch DS9's "Favor the Bold" and "Sacrifice of Angels" back-to-back.

"Revulsion"

The A-Plot:
Leland Orser gives a great performance as the neurotic hologram Dejaran. It's fitting that I watched this the day after Halloween if not on Halloween, because he's a murderer trying to hide those murders from the Doctor and Torres and they're in real jeopardy. The Doctor can go into non-existence if Dejaran destroys his Mobile Emitter.

Dejaran seems nice if shy at first, but once he gets going when he talks about how crude and disgusting he thinks organics are, it's clear that he's a danger to Torres if not the Doctor if he goes too unhinged. I feel bad for Dejaran in that he was clearly treated badly by the crew of the ship he was on and that's what drove him to this emotional volatile state. That and the crew should've adjusted his temperament or at least been more careful around him if they knew he was so volatile. But maybe they didn't, because it does look like he caught them off-guard and unprepared since he was able to kill six of them before Voyager arrived on the scene.

The Doctor and Dejaran are a contrast that the Doctor can work in functional society and Dejaran can't. The Doctor also looks more Human, implying he's more advanced than Dejaran who looks like a Soong-type Android (even though he's not) complete with gold skin and similar hair to Data and Lore's.

Dejaran's not thinking straight, but it's interesting that he thinks Holograms are the higher form of life when without a device to sustain their existence, they disappear into oblivion.

Once Dejaran says the Doctor thinks like an Organic, all bets are off. Especially after Dejaran deactivates the Doctor and wants to use the Mobile Emitter for himself. Good thing Torres was there to stop Dejaran once and for all, even though it was a struggle. I think they could've played up the action and the suspense a little bit more, but it works as is.

The B-Plot: Kim assigned to develop a new Astrometric Lab with Seven. In other words, a man who's awkward around women he's attracted to in general working with a woman who's still re-learning what it's like to be Human and has no social grace to speak of. Definitely a comedic pairing if I ever saw one.

They tackle Seven of Nine's sexuality and how they're going to handle this aspect of her head-on. She looks sexy but has no interest in sex unless it's something to explore as scientific curiosity. Back in 1997, when my family and I were watching this episode, we all laughed when Seven told Kim, "Take off your clothes." I don't remember, but I feel like this could've been in the UPN Trailer if they went there. I'll have to look it up online.

Awkward all around in a funny way. Kim tries to take Paris' advice to not pursue her, so that had to send Kim's anxiety through the roof when Seven put him on the spot like that. So much so that he wants off the project, but Chakotay essentially says, "Nah, suck it up!" Then Chakotay grins. Once again, played for laughs. So, yeah. I'm calling it. Kim's the butt-end of the jokes today. And not just one.

Tuvok's Promotion: Great to see Tuvok's promotion, along with his speech accompanying his acceptance of it. Even though being a Lieutenant Commander now doesn't change his being Security Officer, I think he should've had that rank a long time ago. Speaking of someone else who should've had a higher rank a long time ago... Ensign Kim! Clearly Janeway can move someone up in rank and it doesn't disrupt anything. So why isn't Kim a Lieutenant by now?

Despite this not being a great day for Kim, it was amusing enough and I still enjoyed the episode overall. I give it an 8.
