There are just people who are never going to be happy. This was a great movie, and yes, there were some nit-pick items that you could get your panties in a wad over (transwarp transporters, Delta Vega location, etc.) but they're ultimately irrelevant in the face of the overall work. If the movie had sucked, then sure pick away (a la nuBSG Starbuck-copout finale), but this was a great kick in the pants that the franchise desperately needed. Purists aren't funding new Star Trek by themselves.

A friend of mine reported that they refused to go see the movie because so many die-hards had told them it was horrible...and that they felt justified in saying that because they had seen it five times this weekend hoping each time it was going to be better each time, but ultimately unhappy. Great, spend $50 each on a movie they hated...delusional.

I havent seen anyone here saying you must hate the film only questioning it. Its a valid point. This is the first new trek in 4 years. Its the biggest sicif release out right now along with Wolverine. Its bound to get some people overating it. I believe its overated and some people letting their excitement and lack of Trek for 4 years cloud their judgements a little. plus the fact the TOS characters are in it. But Im not force feeding them that opinion. If you dont agree with it fine. I have seen some people criticising others for questioning the timeline in this film. So it does work both ways.

OK, this meme about Trek withdrawl and resulting overreaction to Trek XI is silly. I suppose most of the 96% of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are from hardcore Trekker critics who've finally gotten their fix? Not likely.

I have seen those threads and posts as well. But again its just opinions and it shouldnt bother anyone. Come on we all knew that it would happen. We shouldnt be surpirsed by it. I didnt like the film very much, but I repsect the fact that people did. I have my reasons(stated above) why I think that reason may be. I feel it was overated. Sorry thats just me. BUT I am happy that others are happy with it. They will have another couple of films tp enjoy. But it stops here for me.

It stops here for you? Then why didn't it stop in '02 after Nemsis? Or in 1989 after TFF, for that matter?

I actually thought Nemsis was just as good or Better than this film. The things that people complained about in Nemsis was to much CGI and Picard not acting the same,Data being fat, Shinzon was like Khan. This nuTrek wasnt much different from Nemsis. So the complaints over this film arent as silly as many of the complaints over Nemsis. TFF did suck though. BUT I really dont want to watch Trek in a divergent universe created by Spock and Nero. Doesnt appeal to me. Thats my biggest gripe with the film.

^^ The divergent universe doesn't bother me because I never really cared how one Star Trek film "connected to" another Star Trek film in the first place (except, of course, II and III).

I'm not big on the Mythology of Star Trek or any other TV show that has such a mythology. It may be a "fun diversion" to follow the canon of Star Trek, but that doesn't make or break a film for me.

To me each Star Trek film is a stand-alone work, and I don't care that this one also stands alone via the divergent universe -- I just care if it is enjoyable.

I did go into this film with an open heart. The alternate timeline didnt bothr me at first.(until I saw how they did it) But even if it was say a parallel universe that always existed, I just didnt find it to enjoyable.

I was very excited about the movie. I knew it was going to be a reboot, and I was OK with that. It's just that the film was so badly written it disappointed me. I hope there will be better sequels (preferably made by different writers and a different director).

Since thursday I've learned I like popcorn flicks, have ADD (or ADHD but I'm too lazy to write that), am a moron, phaser bursts are lazy, I'm a traitor and would love to perform sexual acts JJ Abrams among other things that were all news to me.

Trek withdrawl is a new one for me though. I'll have to keep a note of that. I've had my eye on my DVD (and VHS) collection and they're still there, I've watched them in the run up to this movie. With how much we can see on TV and own in our own secret stash... the withdrawl excuse seems to be lazy writing.

In fairness, he's right - some of the detractors have been accused of not being very bright. Right here, right in this very forum, by some of us present now.

Nemesis was crap, and the reasons had nothing to do with anything you list. The reason that no one but hard-core trekkies ever saw it was because no one who wasn't pre-sold had a single reason to see it based on what it was and therefore what the studio had to work with in promoting it.

I would say I have seen that on both sides. There are the Trek drones out there that love anything Trek, however the opposite side that has been droning on and on about how bad the movie is, can't accept the people who like it.

The canon police state needs to accept...it went out the door with the movie. There will be a new canon / altered canon based on the events in this alternate time line.

Plus it is just a movie. We didn't lose anything because of this.

It is a little But a lot of it makes me feel a little embarrassed.

I know a lot of people who were put off by ST as we all seemed like elitist fanboys - and those angry at the world stereotypes do tend to make the rest of us look bad.

Well I always say, that if you're going to call someone thick, the least you can do is get your grammar right. I don't even mean typos, they don't count.

And hey, I am not calling anyone stupid or less enlightened than I am or any other nonsense in the general direction just because they didn't like it. I'm not insulted by people not liking it. I just think it's curious how personal people can get over a matter of taste.

The long time Trek fans are typically in the more cerebral professions. Long time Trek fans typically are a bit smarter than the masses. JJ Abrams has specifically said he wanted a film that appealed to the masses. "Star Trek for the rest of us" is a typical line in some reviews, and even the title of some reviews. Compared to most of the other Trek stuff out there, the new film is "dumbed down." Much less techno-babble, none of the continuity, etc. That doesn't mean anyone who likes it is dumb. That may be what some people are claiming, but that's just ignorance on their part. I'm not saying people who like this film are dumb, that's obviously not the case.

People can like dumbed-down action thrill rides without being dumb themselves. That there are long time Trek fans who adore this movie proves that intelligent people can like this film. But that doesn't mean that the film is itself an intelligent film.
