Iv just Started watching DS9 on virgin 1. I'm a very big fan of voyager and i just wounded does it get more interesting, I'm not sure what episode i watched today but it looked very good. So far my favourite character is Jadzia Dex if iv got that right? If i can get more reasons from you guys to persuade me why its good and what intrested you to choose this. i may purchase the seasons :) Thanks guys

Well, since you're coming from a Voyager background, I will say that you aren't really going to get too many one-off alien-of-the-week action-adventure hours, though there are a few. And though Voyager was more focused on all-out action than DS9 was, I think the action on DS9 is generally superior and more visceral, especially since the action on DS9 has much more far-reaching consequences.

On DS9, it may take you a bit to get into, as the first season is fairly slow, but I think you'll appreciate how much time they take to build up the characters. By the time things really start happening, you should really care about each character and the twists and turns of the series' plot and how it affects everyone indivudually becomes that much more gripping.

When I watched Voyager on its first run, I enjoyed it each week, and looked forward to the new episodes, purely for the TNG-style entertainment value. But I enjoyed DS9 much more because the season-long plot arcs really drew me in, and personally I get more excited about shows that are more serialized. Plus over the course of the series each crew member changes so much and the events of the show really give us a fresh perspective on the Federation and just fell soooo epic, whereas on Voyager I wasn't drawn in by the characters or the week-to-week adventures as much. But again, that's mainly personal preference.

So keep watching, I'm sure you'll be hooked by seasons 2 or 3, and keep us updated with your progress and thoughts! Season 5 is the greatest thing ever. Not season, thing. Ever. In history.

I just checked the Virgin 1 website and it said that today's episode was The Siege, which is an odd point to start watching the show because it was the third part of a trilogy. Does the show get better? I would say yes, in fact I would consider The Siege to be the weakest part of the Circle trilogy, although I do still enjoy the episode. I would say that around that point is when DS9 started to get good and it will get better as the show goes on.

As carlmarx said, DS9 isn't that similar to Voyager, you could even say that the two shows went in completely the opposite directions to one another. That's not to say that people can't enjoy both, plenty of people on this board do, but don't watch DS9 expecting it to be similar to Voyager, it is a very different kind of show.

The first season of DS9 should be familiar to anyone that has seen Star Trek before, it is full of standalone episodes and there's plenty of new aliens and technobabble. DS9 starts to set itself apart in season 2 as the show started to become more political and episodes began to reference past events. In the season 2 finale something very big happens that I wont spoil in case you don't know, and from that point on the show has a new direction. The final few seasons of the show are moderately serialised and tell the story of a major war that takes place between a half-dozen powers to determine the future of known space. This makes DS9 the Star Trek show with the biggest sense of scale, but it also makes the show rather heavy and some people don't like the themes the show explored. But even during the war there's plenty of light fluff to keep things balanced, such as a baseball episode and a casino heist.

Personally, I love DS9, it's possibly my favourite show ever made. It has some rough patches, but once you get to the final three seasons it is a very strong show. :)

It's actually Dax, but we'll let you get away with it for now. ;)

If you like Jadzia then you might like the episode that should be on tomorrow, it's about a member of the Trill species that comes to the station to abduct Dax out of Jadzia's body.

Definitely keep watching. DS9, like TheGodBen said, is a whole different animal from Voyager. But for my money, it's way better because of that. There's a much better sense of continuity and scale, and it's much more character-driven overall. I think you picked a weird episode to start on, but a good time in general, since season 2 is where DS9 really starts to find itself.

Definitely keep watching, you won't regret it. Deep Space Nine is really something special when it's on its A-game.

I'm a Star Trek fan who started by watching TOS reruns in the 80s, and I just started watching DS9 very recently.

Where's it been all my life??? :p

Keep watching!
