Re-Remaster

As all the blurays of TNG Remastered were released, and no info on the other series, I have to ask will there be a new set of remasters in the future?

With this I mean a completely new remaster in the future.

Should we expect a re-remaster of TOS, or even of all Star Trek, in the 2030s-2040s?

What resolution will they use 32k? Or will it be in 3D?

Would they finally correct all the mistakes? Or perhaps even use virtual actors if available?

Still being the most recognized sci-fi franchise, I imagine Star Trek will be used to demo new tech for many years to come. A full blown remaster? Probably not. But an episode here or there redone? I think it'll be likely.

Let me know when they perfect the 3-D version of "The Cage" with Susan Oliver dancing in your living room.

There would be little or no benefit to any Trek that currently exists in a 4K format, even the two most recent films would be marginal at best.

I think we are probably optimistic assuming there will be demand for the old trek shows in the 2030s - maybe TOS, but a lot of TNG has dated badly, and the others were never THAT popular in the first place!

The TOS remastering project was started in 2006.
Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1 on HD-DVD was released 20 November 2007. The original camera negative transfers were done in 2006 in 1080p resolution. Technology has come a certain amount since then in 9 years with 4k transfers from 35mm for high profile projects.
The TNG-Remastered series was transferred at 1080p [in 10-bit LOG 4:4:4 color sampling] starting in 2011.

Many movies today still get 2K resolution rather than 4K DI’s (Digital Intermediates). 4K is very expensive though prices come down each year.
With the original aspect ratio of the 1960s TOS and 1980-90s TNG series maintained as a square 1:33:1 it sticks out as dated since it is not in the standard 1.78:1 HD and UHD (4k & 8k) aspect ratios that have been ratified in the HD & UHD specifications.
includes 4K UHD (2160p) and 8K UHD (4320p)
The Consumer Electronics Association announced on October 17, 2012, that "Ultra High Definition", or "Ultra HD", would be used for displays that have an aspect ratio of at least 16:9 and at least one digital input capable of carrying and presenting native video at a minimum resolution of 3840×2160 pixels
pillarboxed with vertical black bars at that resolution would be highly undesirable if not an upconversion from 1080p HD.
Two resolutions are defined as UHDTV:
4K UHDTV (2160p) is 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall .
8K UHDTV (4320p) is 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall
8k only benefits from having a very large physical screen. I think 4k will be around until 2025-2030.
While I don't think CBS Home Entertainment would make much money releasing a physical media format of TOS or TNG in 4k I think there is the possibility of an 8k release in 2025. The makeup and sets already look pretty phony in 1080p HD and start to ruin the illusion of storytelling.

See my thread about the Trek feature films and remastering:
why another blu-ray of all Trek movies by 2016 will happen

also
4K Blu-ray Disc will be licensed in the spring or summer of 2015 and 4K Blu-ray Disc players have an expected release date of late 2015

I think with the next Trek film out 8 July 2016 that
CBS Home Entertainment (formerly CBS Video, currently branded as CBS DVD for DVD releases and CBS Blu-ray for Blu-ray releases) will put out a few products that year.
1. A Blu-ray (1080p) of the Star Trek 3 "Untitled Star Trek Sequel" around late November 2016.
2. A remastered TOS movie collection in 4k Blu-ray Disc in mid-August 2016.
3. A remastered TOS movie collection Blu-ray (1080p) in early September 2016.
and in 2017
4. A remastered TNG movie collection 4k Blu-ray Disc in February 2017
5. 4. A remastered TNG movie collection Blu-ray (1080p) in April 2017

I don't think we are going to see JJ Abrams new Star Trek movies in 4k. All of the ILM big-budget special effects were done at 2k and the film is mastered at 2k and done in 3-D. They would be too costly to redo in 4k or 8k.

As far as a yet-announced Star Trek next TV series see my thread:

Holodeck version of TNG will be available in 2039 including an AI that reshapes the events of each episode according to your actions. Also allows you to play past the end of Nemesis and create your own ending to TNG.

You might get one or the other from each movie series, but not both. It makes no sense. Probably will be the 1080p collection as there won't be a huge install base for 4K Blu-ray yet.

So you think after 7 years since the 2009 release in 2016 Paramount is only going to remaster the TOS movies in 1080p (again)?

A little history:
Blu-ray disc format's official release was June 2006.
The Sony PlayStation 3 home video game console November 17, 2006. PlayStation 3 featured a Blu-ray Disc drive Blu-ray movies. When it was released it sold well and was a very good Blu-ray player.
There was a format war for consumer high definition video at the time with HD-DVD and Blu-ray. CBS Home Entertainment went with HD-DVD. Star Trek TOS seasons 1 and 2 were released in high definition on HD-DVD first.
Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1 HD-DVD was released 20 November 2007 during the format war of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. That is only 1.5 years after the format launched. Then the HD physical disc format war ended with Blu-ray being the winner.
The Blu-ray of the TOS first season was released on April 27, 2009 to correspond with the May 8, 2009 release of Star Trek (2009) feature film's marketing that same quarter.

As I already mentioned
4K Blu-ray Disc will be licensed in the spring or summer of 2015 and 4K Blu-ray Disc players have an expected release date of late 2015

Blu-ray faces competition from video-on-demand VOD and 4k is most likely going to be popular from VOD. Blu-ray was discussed as the last physical format consumers would buy movies and TV series on. With store shelf space scarce with Blu-ray and DVDs already a 4k disc will probably be a niche market for getting high end audiophile music products. This is why I don't see Trek TV older series getting a 4k physical media release. The feature films are a different story.
Even with a data stream with Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 Speaker Configuration can be handled with VOD. beginning in 2015, there will be numerous releases of both current and catalog titles available on Blu-ray-Disc. So I can extrapolate that Paramount wants their product released in 2016 to last as long as it can by being compatible with the latest technology and that would be in UHD4k and Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 on 4k Blu-ray Disc .
Even TV shows like Breaking Bad was remastered in 4k from 35mm film and released in streaming VOD on Netflix.
FX’s drama Justified, Showtime's Masters of Sex, NBC's The Blacklist are all being mastered in 4k and Netflix' House of Cards is also being released for streaming in 4k in 2014. That is in 2013 and 2014. By the time 2016 rolls around 4k is pretty standard for a major catalog re-release and something like a big franchise like Star Trek.
Are people really going to be watching Star Trek II: TWOK in the year 2018 in 1080p HD? STII:TWOK was already released in Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround sound in 2009.
I think Paramount wants to monetize this franchise's various properties as much as they can spread it out.

No. They'll likely be remastered in 4K but downscaled to 1080p for a more wide release. You won't get two distinct releases near each other. Then Paramount will come around a couple years after that (if Blu-ray 4K takes off) and release them in 4K.

Perhaps the PTB will consider releasing Nu-Trek at least, in 4D, so we can go back in time with our remotes on rewind and fix the GD timeline and get back to nor...ah, never mind...

I do agree with much of the above analysis, in terms of future re-re-re release jazz, and also believe that with new platforms inevitably coming on-line, new "versions" will be needed. However, I can see that not all of the Franchise incarnations would necessarily make it.

SERIOUS SERIOUS question: Is anyone aware of a reliable source with regard to a timeline for true holo (3-D) viewing, as suggested above, where Susan Oliver "really" would be dancing in our living rooms?

HIjol could you be more specific as to which technology you are asking about?
A glasses-worn smaller augmented reality 3-D like Microsoft HoloLens

Volumetric Display 3-D motion video display.
"A true 3D display should have the scene or object in real space (floating in mid-air), allowing the viewer to look around objects"
Volumetric display 2 types:
Swept-volume display or Static volume
truly 3D displays including billboards, kiosks, theaters, medicine, radar imaging, military and entertainment. To meet these growing applications, we introduce a large swept-volume display (LSVD) that is capable of displaying full-motion 3D video.

or a large motion video still requiring a screen
HoloVizio 3D Light Field display technology (Holographic)

Colloidal Display
A Colloidal Display: membrane screen that combines transparency, BRDF and 3D volume

or another specific technology to acheive holo 3-D viewing?

Nah, you're asking Lucas-level stuff. I don't think Roddenberry's vision was that specific.
