Is it just me, or did anybody else, when the name "Challenger" came up, immediately think of the "UFPF Challenger," the Belle Terre's cobbled-together, crewed-by misfits, makeshift starship?

Nope. Given the cover of the book, it's in reference to Voyagers 100th episode, Timeless.

Can this be merged with the main thread by anychance?

No. I thought of the space shuttle Challenger which blew up in 1986, for which both the ship in the New Earth books and the Galaxy-class starship in VGR: "Timeless" and IFM were undoubtedly named. Although there was a suggestion in the novel that that Challenger was actually named in honor of the HMS Challenger, the 1850s sailing ship for which the space shuttle was named in turn.

So far it's lookin' like it's just you.

Had I ever read the New Earth series, I might've thought of it too, but, since I haven't...

Like Christopher, I thought of the shuttle.
