RDM's Voyage

"I have very hurt feelings about Brannon. What happened between he and I is just between he and I. It was a breakdown of trust. I would have quit any show where I was not allowed to participate in the process like that. I wasn’t allowed to participate in the process, and I wasn’t part of the show. I felt like I was freelancing my own show. ... I was very disappointed that my long-time friend and writing partner acted in that manner, that crossed lines to the point where I felt like I had to walk away from Star Trek, which was something that meant a lot to me for a very long time, from my childhood right through my entire professional career."[3]

Interesting quote there...RDM is credited with BARGE OF THE DEAD and SURVIVAL INSTINCT, two of my favorite Voyager episodes. I just went through the list of episodes he did on all the TREKs he worked on...and I have to say, the guy did pretty good. Some of our KlingonTREK fans don't like how he handled the KLINGONS..but I did. I think he gave them some of their best episodes..

But RDM and Brannon...Do you think they are friends now???

Rob

I'm not sure that they are friends, but they certainly seem to have patched things up and they get along well enough on the commentaries for Generations and First Contact (which are well worth a listen).

I'd love to know what it was Braga did that made Moore feel betrayed, I don't think he explains it in the whole interview, and that was one loooong interview.

You're right, he doesn't. And I agree, I'd like to know what happened too.

i'll have to find the interview. i either saw it on the dvd extras or online somewhere but IIRC moore essentially says he was left out of senior staff meetings and the decision making process. he went to braga to voice his concerns and braga basically blew him off like he was a very low underling. braga has admitted that he handled things poorly with ron and they both say they've since patched things up.

I didn't realize that there was a quarrel between RDM and Brannon. Wonder what that was all about? An interview would be nice. :D

I came across a link in one of the topics in the Trek Lit forum yesterday (I can't remember which one specifically, sorry) that led to an interview with RDM where he said that Brannon was getting it on all sides about Voyager - the higher ups wanting to play it safe and stick to TNG-lite while some of those on Brannon's level and below wanted to at least play with the formula a little, and then getting it from his former writing partner as well... The impression I get was that they were both stressed under their separate problems with what was going on and wound up taking it out on each other.

All of which was a great shame - the Braga/Moore writing partnership was, briefly, one of Trek's greatest strengths - AGT is a stunning episode, First Contact of course worked well, and I even like Generations, although I know I'm in a minority on that. I regret circumstances were such that they didn't get to bring that partnership to doing something with VOY's last couple of seasons.

No words were spoken more true than those...

Hmm..that's interesting. Thanks for sharing it. ;) Goes to show you how much I read into the media!

I just don't think Braga was producer material. There was also so many people that were let go or disenfranchised with the TPTB, including Moore, that would have been better suited to the role.

I love how after years of many (including me) bashing Braga about Voyager, our suspicions are confirmed and it comes out that it was primarily the studio that frakked up the show.

When are these studios going to realize that come shows are not meant for 85% of the viewing audience--that 20% or so is still a good number of viewers. Even 10% is pretty good sometimes.

To think that many (including me) have been blaming the directors, producers, writers, and actors (that one doesn't include me) when all the time, it was the stupid suits who probably never watched the show and don't give squat for the fans.

I agree with about 90 percent of what you said. But some of the story decisions on Voyager have to be put directly at Braga's feet. Someday, someone is going to write a TELLALL book from that cast/production team. I for one cant wait!!!

Rob

Well, we may as well also blame Jeri Taylor, Bryan Fuller and Ken Biller too since they were all Producers and Chief Story Editors at points in the show.
