The point of DE wasn't to turn it into a completely different movie to satisfy those who didn't like it. It was to give a well known, Oscar winning director a chance to edit the movie the way he wanted to do originally, something that was denied him because of the rush to get the movie to theaters. It is a director's cut.

There are many who think they cut too much and they prefer the theatrical version. So creating a version that will satisfy everyone is not possible and they shouldn't even try. I like both versions, I prefer DE slightly more. Yeah they may have gone too far with the 2001 style, but it is what it is, a different Trek movie that is very majestic and cinematic.

Watching TMP on a big screen when it was first released is one of the most enjoyable movie experiences I've ever had. It made me a hardcore fan of ST. So I don't want to see it cut down in a vain attempt to make it an action adventure movie.

I very much agree they shouldn't try to turn it into an action-adventure movie---how could they--they didn't film any?

I'm saying, they could have eliminated reaction shots and repeated orders and saved 10 minutes--without changing the nature of the movie at all.
Next time you watch TMP take a big sip of beer every time someone repeats an order. By the end you'll be passed out or will have puked. It just wasn't needed.
The crew looked more stunned staring at a big blue cloud than Moses' people did when the Red Sea parted.
These people had seen all kinds of sh*t in 15 or 20 years of service. They filmed all that reaction stuff long before they had any idea of what the FX would be. It was plainly just a mistake to use all or even most of that reaction stuff.

^ I agree. The movie seems to revel too much in its special effects, which on top of all, were mainly wide shots of the enterprise or some cool effect they felt they had to include. It's not even some action-packed space battle or some such shit that plagues a lot of sci fi flicks. I'm not saying action packed SFX is what I want, far from it. But a lot of the scenes we get in TMP are too long, too similar and in the end only detract from the actual story that was really good. It just needs some serious trimming to give the movie a decent pace overall.

That coupled with some odd decisions when it comes to costumes and overall look just makes it the most un-Trek movie for me. Don't get me wrong, the story is all TOS and I do like it a lot, it's just the execution of it that seems off to me.

I give it a 3. While I do find the film a bit slow and plodding, somewhat paradoxically the SLV was my favorite, as it incorporated some interesting scenes left out of the other versions. While I do have issues with the pacing, the real problems I have with the movie is the story is just too familiar to really be interesting, and two of the main characters (Kirk and Spock) are too far removed from their TOS characterizations for my tastes.

Still, it has its moments.

Yes, it was made by a director. That speaks to me. It was like a movie you'd see in a movie house or a film made to be seen on a huge screen or a theater with only one screen or projected by a projector.

So was Wise's last film about the break dancers. Made by a real director.

Three stars. It's the most epic and genuinely cinematic (as opposed to a bloated TV episode) of the movies but it's let down by too many turgid scenes that seem to last for days.

I gotta ask about this love of the SLV...WHAT interesting scenes were cut back in? Seriously? Sulu stumbling over himself? Endless background bridge chatter during the V'ger attack? Kirk's stating the obvious with McCoy before leaving the ship in a mismatched spacesuit?

Someone please explain, cause it does not compute to me.

TMP is the best Trek movie. I give it 5 stars(star trek scale). However i give it 4 stars in general. It had pacing problem but least it was ambitious and cinematic.

The main one that sticks in my head is Decker's "We all create god in our own image" bit. My favorite line of the whole movie.

The SLV compared to the theatrical version added back the self-destruct order and comments in engineering.

That is a superb line and hints at what TMP could have been like, I guess. The trouble with all the versions is that a lot of the dialog is just "viewer ahead", "viewer astern", etc.

The delf destruct thing's in the in DE as well.

I *get* that people miss certain lines, but to my mind those two of three gems that aren't in the other versions are not worth suffering through all the added padding and bad scenes in the SLV.

I know that is why I said compared to the theatrical version. Now Decker's line is the who crux of the plot (originally called In They Image.)

I loved all that extra stuff in the SLV. It felt more real to me.
