blah blah Picard is out of character, blah blah"

Which is a complaint I've never understood. Yeah, Picard was acting unusual and incompetent...which was the whole freaking point of his development over the course of the film. The writers did it on purpose. How is it a problem?

It's still one of my favourite star trek movies. I prefer to rate TOS and TNG movies seperatley, so first contact is my favourite TNG movie.

I know I had two problems with Picard's character in FC. First, he'd already gone through these issues with the Borg with Hugh in "I, Borg". It was a rehash.

Second, he seemed to get over his maniacle ravings ("And I will make them pay for what they've done!") too quickly. Yes, it was a GREAT moment. But as soon as it happened, it was done, and Stewart was playing the affable Picard again. It just... didn't seem right.

Not exactly. I think the idea is that he had to get all that bitter, self-centered hatred out of his system and the release of hearing himself yell it out loud, combined with Lily's accusation that it was motivating him to selfishly put his crew in danger just to satisfy his own desire for vengeance got him to see the error of his ways. That's why he was able to get back to his usual, more sensible self. It wasn't just a snap reversion with no explanation. His outburst and Lily's prodding were basically therapy that made his mistakes clear to him.

Certain aspects of it are good. The Battle of Earth was pretty cool to see, as well as First Contact with the Vulcans, but other parts of the movie aren't.

For one, the direction is plodding at times, and certain sets (such as reusing Voyager's sickbay) just reek of cheapness. Also, I would have loved to have seen a more realistic post-apocalyptic Earth instead of seeing clear blue skies and untouched Montana terrain littered with pop up tents.

I love this movie, although it isn't perfect. It's still about my favourite of all the Trek movies.

I am, however, sick and tired of all the TNG bashing of late. You'd think people would actually have the ability to let others enjoy whatever entertainment they enjoy in peace. But no, we have Nu Trek now, so let's just piss all over the TNG fans. Pretty sad, really.

Ya there has been alot of TNG bashing lately. I dont get why people have to bash TNG (or any other Trek) because they like the new movie. I like the new movie too but still can appreciate old trek! I am however glad to see First Contact doing so good in this poll as it shows that fans do still think First Contact is good!

There has been a lot of TOS bashing too, ironically.

People have been bashing TNG for years now. Long before Nemesis in fact. I've noticed an increase in TNG criticsm since DS9 became really popular around here.

Huh! I never felt Picard was out of character in FC. I do think he was out of character in Nemesis. Those early "humorous" scenes (especially the wedding reception) seemes so forced to me.

And DS9 is really just a B5 rip off about a boring war and terrible characters that seem flawed for the sake of it (like Picard and First Contact).

Not to mention the incessant and juvenile romances. I think every character on DS9 had and unrequited hardon for every other character on that program at one point or another. But I digress.

First Contact ought to be in any conversation as "one of the best" Trek films of all time. Even allowing for personal tastes, it's hard to objectively place more than three Trek films above it when considering such things as critical reception, fan reception, production, writing, pacing, etc.

It's not that FC is above critique -- there certainly are legitimate points of criticism in the film -- but if susceptibility to critique is a criteria for determining excellence, it fares better than most Trek films.

Personally, I place it second, behind TWOK and ahead of nuTrek.

In recent years i've found the flaws nag at me more - the opening is rushed (borg coming? borg here ! ships asplode! back in time! in like 15 minutes). And the whole "meanwhile, back on earth" b-plot is pedestrian.

Still a good action-Trek film overall tho.
