Rascals

Has anyone every bothered to look up pictures of the former kid actors to see how their adult selfs match up to the characters they played back then?
Not very well

Caroline Junko King (Young Keiko) from her facebook, alongside Rosalind Chao

Isis Carmen Jones (Young Guinan) alongside Whoopi
At least I think this is her. It's the only adult photo that the web search yielded

Interestingly enough, Not only did Birkin play Rene Picard in Family, but Isis Jones also played the younger version of Whoopi's character in Sister Act

The O'Briens' situation was certainly more interesting dramatically than watching kid Guinan trying to talk kid Ro into jumping on a bed.

And David Tristan Birkin was great in this, though I liked his Rene better.
I don't know, I mean ... it would be cute for the kids watching STAR TREK to finally relate to the characters a little more and maybe even find a new favourite because of something like seeing a little kid Guinan or Ro being silly and having some fun with their unlikely situation. I suspect any kid watching Keiko and O'Brien having Tall Talk would have it leap them right out of the show. This kind of an episode is one I wouldn't have wanted to see them repeat, but if it was done alot better, it's not one I would've wanted to erase, either.

I almost watched Hang time a thousand times, almost, because Megan Parlen was that adorable sort of Neurotic I like so much, but then I noticed that it was Hang Hime.

Saved by the Bell Lite.

It's worth noting that Isis Jones had already played Young Whoopi in one of her movies (was it one of the Sister Act movies?), so she pretty much already had a handle on imitating her.

It's on the record that Patrick Stewart himself spent considerable time with David Birkin, coaching him on how to mimic his acting style as the adult Picard. And I think Birkin pulls it off fantastically well, I find his performance utterly believable as really being Picard (unlike Tom Hardy, who shows nothing of Picard in his performance, regrettably).

I heard that young Ro was a little harder to teach. One or two scenes did really capture Forbes' performance, but apparently they had to work just a little bit more with her.

I suspect Whoopi probably recommended Jones for the episode due to this.

That's not really a good comparison though. Picard and Shinzon had completely different upbringings so it's hardly surprising that they had distinctly different personalities. They could have cast any good actor who bore a resemblance to Patrick Stewart for that role.

The enormous role of upbringing inside, there are still the same genes at play. I'm told by my mother that I often stand in exactly the same position as her father, who I never met. I don't know if there's some biological basis for that, but something like it could have been incorporated in Nemesis; think of Shinzon doing the "Picard Maneuver" with a more pliable top.
