Rare Trek Photos for December 2008

Hey all, check out the December edition. I know, I know, delayed a whole 36 hours. I'm so evil. :P My computer fried, though, so... heh. Out of my hands.

Some favorites of mine...

First row, center: Sisko. I mentioned having this photo about 2 or 3 months ago. Here it finally is.

Second row, center: Stephen Collins and Persis Khambatta have birthday cake.

Last row, center: Just the look on Shatner's face... so 'peachy keen 1960s' and all. Priceless. LOL.

Page 2, second row, left: This is really the highest quality copy of this early TNG cast and creators photo you'll likely ever see. I have an 11X15 print I scanned in and fixed up. I doubt any better will ever exist due to the quality of the original film the picture was taken on.

Third row, left: A rejected publicity photo of T'Pol... or rather, her ass. Yes, folks. This is real. I know they take a variety of angles for PB shots, but I've never before seen a photo of a cast member from this unique angle!

Third row, right: You know the Trek XI trailer? Young Kirk in the corvette? Take a close look at the car Shatner's in...

Fifth row, left: Super Hi-Res copy of TUC cast. This comes from a 35 MM publicity slide. You'll never find better size/clarity.

Fifrth row, center: My god, I love Terry Farrell? Just how far do those spots really go down?

Thank you so much for doing this. I love seeing the rare and, let's face it, funny-looking, photos. I really like that one of Robert Beltran, and the one of the Voyager trio on the bridge. Some really good stuff here.

Can any of you eagle-eyed experts ID the episode Shatner and Nimoy were shooting in the B&W Mad Magazine pic? (Second page, second row.) I'm thinking it's mid second season but can't be sure.

Since the MAD magazine in question would have to have been the December 1967 issue, (the complete "Star Blecch", with color by Kail, can be found here) it sounds like you're in the ballpark. I'm pretty sure I've seen it stated before which ep they were shooting there, but I don't recall. I'm also thinking that Frontier has included that same shot or one very close to it in one of his collections before, so he may have the answer.

I do try not to repeat myself, but sometimes new variants show up, not to mention (superior) quality versions.

As to what episode... I've not the foggiest! LOL

It could have been the photographers request, something for the private collection. One of the photogaphers I work with is a little sleazy - oddly it's one of the reasons I liked him.

I know exactly what this is. The regular cast members of ENT were put into full makeup and costume, and taken off to be computer body-scanned, to create the prototypes of the Art Asylum action figure range. There were media articles at the time detailing this event; it was said to be unique that body-scanning was used instead of traditional sculpting by an artist.

Mind you, when the figures came out, people still complained about the likenesses, and T'Pol's figure was said to have very skinny arms, but her figure was uncannily like this shot.

Quite likely. In fact, I think this is the only real possibility. If the studio requested such, or any of the producers... that would have been... odd.

If only this where the case. No, I'm afraid the computer body scanning is done with special cameras hooked up to computers, and in an entirely different process. I believe one of the Nemesis DVD special features showed Patrick Stewart and Tom Hardy both in costume being scanned in this manner. It's not something they use traditional photography for, or 2-d photography for either.

It's not the same shot, but it's clearly taken at the same time. Looking at Hapless Crewman's guesses here again:

I'd say that "A Private Little War" is the more likely candidate of the two. As the magazine in the picture is the December '67 issue and "Friday's Child" aired on December 1 of that year, they would have had to be on an extremely tight production schedule for that even to have been possible. "A Private Little War" aired on February 2, '68, making it the best bet.

Great work and much appreciated, as always, Frontier!

One little remark, though:
When you scan previously printed material, you often end up with a somewhat anoying overlay of moiré, as is evidenced in some of these pictures.

This can be very efficiently removed with a little of "Selective Gaussian Blur" (if that is the correct English translation). I don't know but this feature in Photoshop, Gimp etc. may have actually been included for that very purpose.

It takes a little experimenting to remove the moiré without losing too much details e.g. in the hair but then it gives very satisfactory results.

I propose you try it out yourself or tell me where to send the cleaned-up pictures to.
