These are the ones I find most interesting. The third, of course, shows us a basic idea that would be eventually developed. And it clearly illustrates my point---this design could go in different directions, yet it's only a starting point. And we know how it ended up.

I've got a design somewhere, based on an MJ sketch, that illustrates what I'm talking about. I'll look for it.
 
At the time I drew it wasn't intended to be. I imagined it as perhaps in the era of the Valiant about fifty years or so before TOS. If I were doing it now I'd make some changes.
 
Just a note. Today many drawings and schematics are done on computer with some drawing program or other. My design was drafted by hand with pencil the old school way. :lol:

I later coloured it with Photoshop after scanning it in.
 
Somebody around here did some #d model of it. I'll try to find the images. I think it was lennier.

Here's a variation, a revision actually, I did in Photoshop some years afterward. Last year actually.

Here we are. I Photoshoped it against a layered background and tweaked the colouring. of the ship.

Not as much as 'd like. I'm trotting out a few things at a time in the TOS forum in my Warped 9's never seen scenes thread. Just posted a few more just a little while ago.

That is really, really nice work, Warped9. Those paintings are superb.
Knowing that you realized this in photoshop, it reminds me of great aviation paintings, Robert Taylor, John Shaw, etc. etc. Love to see some of your sketch work, thumbnails, etc. :)
 
Back to the original topic of the thread, I'm afraid--does anyone know (or have an educated guess) whether the art sold through the Roddenberry CafePress store is by Matt Jefferies?

One or two of the drawings, at least, are definitely his (the cutaway and elevation of the early saucer-ship design, for instance). And others are certainly based on his work, like the "not quite there" drawing of the starship with the same basic shape as the "normal" Enterprise--it's nearly identical to other surviving Jefferies drawings.

My question is, do any of you think the whole set of pictures was done by Jefferies? I'm especially curious about the drawing of the "final" Big E... it'd be interesting if that was the great man's take on the ship he designed. (And is that a golden-bronze deflector/sensor dish I see?)

My biggest beef with the Deadalus-class ship we've seen is that they essentially took MJ's sketches as pretty much the final design rather than properly fleshing it out. As is I think it looks childish and ungainly with no real integrity as a design. I think it isn't a bad starting point, but not as a final design.

That's how I feel about these drawings. They're basic conceptual starting points.

And as such, they are such a fertile ground for further development.
