Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system]

I posted today about Kurt Russell but didn't include the complete list of films. I figured I'd start picking more "popular" actors and see how that goes.

Here's how my system works (each category was weighted equally [25%]):

C = Critics rating [taken from Rotten Tomatoes]
BO = Box Office [this represents the gross of the film adjusted for inflation; I used the CPI Inflation Calculator]
O = number of Oscar points [1 point for an Oscar nomination; 3 points for an Oscar win]
IMDB = rating on IMDB

01. Rain Man [most Oscar points; tied for highest IMDB rating]
02. Minority Report
03. Jerry Maguire
04. A Few Good Men
05. Born on the Fourth of July
06. Collateral
07. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles
08. War of the Worlds
09. The Firm
10. Risky Business [highest Rotten Tomatoes rating]

11. The Last Samurai
12. The Color of Money
13. Top Gun [highest grossing film, adjusted for inflation]
14. Magnolia [tied for highest IMDB rating]
15. Mission: Impossible
16. Mission: Impossible III
17. Mission: Impossible II
18. Eyes Wide Shut
19. Taps
20. Vanilla Sky

21. Days of Thunder
22. Far and Away
23. Cocktail
24. Legend
25. All the Right Moves
26. Lions for Lambs
27. Losin' It

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

Although I have most of those movies, the only ones own are Collateral, Rain Man and Minority Report. All of which I love, Collateral is my favourite performance of his.

I don't like or can't remember the rest of his movies enough to be bothered to distinguish enough to rank them.

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

Unbelievable how many great movies Cruise has star in.

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

Wow, Top Gun is #13?

I liked it way more than that.

Legend is #24??

:( :(

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

Interview With A Vampire and Valkyrie are my favorites.
Valkyrie is missing from your list ...

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

Valkyrie: I started to include it, but in all honesty I wasn't sure if it fell under last year's Oscars or was still eligible for the next upcoming Oscars. I decided to play it safe and leave it off the list.

Top Gun: I really enjoy watching it and was a little disappointed at where it is too; reason: 41% on Rotten Tomatoes

Legend: yeah, probably the one I'm the most surprised by. Still, with bad box office results (30.8 million, adjusted for inflation) and poor reviews (52% on Rotten Tomatoes), I guess I shouldn't be.

One of the main reasons I made this list was for me to decide which movies I should still make the effort to see. Believe it or not, I still haven't seen Collateral, so that will definitely be going on my 'Rentals' list...

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

I would put "Taps" ("It's beautiful man !!"), "Legend" (She's beautiful man !!), and "Far and Away" higher on the list.

Taps had a great cast and an outstanding story, but lacked in special effects and sound effects. The acting, dialogue, directing and overall message are a plus for me. Giant thumbs up.

Legend had great cinematography and acting, yet there are far better fantasy adventures stories that have been written as novels yet never made it to film. Overall though it was pleasant to watch and so I give it a thumbs up.

Far and Away was well written, well acted, well directed and had a very non-annoying pace and tone. I definitely give it a thumbs up.

I've only seen 8 movies on that list, sadly... or maybe that's a good thing.

1. Minority Report [A+]
2. The Last Samurai [A+]
3. Collateral [A]
4. Magnolia [A]
5. Interview With the Vampire
6. War of the Worlds
7. Legend [D]
8. Lions for Lambs [D]

It fell under last year's Oscars.

I recalculated for Valkyrie and here's where it would be in the list:

18. Eyes Wide Shut
19. Valkyrie
20. Taps

Born on the Fourth of July is easily the best film on that list that I have seen, although I have yet to see Eyes Wide Shut or Taps. I like Magnolia a lot, too.

Go to youtube and type in Taps - Trailer. You'll see what the movie's about and can decide if you'd want to see it or not.

^ Or as Ben Stiller calls it, TPS. :p

Are you talking about Tropic Thunder? That movie was hilarious. I was in the war so at first I was expecting them to start making fun of soldiers in combat, which isn't something I want to see made fun of. They weren't though. It was a parody of war movies, which is completely different. In fact there were so many war movie references that I can't even begin to count them all without watching it again. It was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

No, they did a spoof where Ben Stiller was Tom Cruise's stunt double and even changed his name to Tom Crooze. He was showing up for movies that didn't even need a stunt double like Cocktail and Magnolia. And he liked to call Taps TPS. Cruise even asks him why he just doesn't call it Taps.

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

I've seen (and in order of preference):

Top Gun
Risky Business
Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles
Rain Man
A Few Good Men
The Last Samurai
Legend
Jerry Maguire
Cocktail
Mission: Impossible
Mission: Impossible II
Minority Report
Eyes Wide Shut
Vanilla Sky

I had a Tom Cruise thing a few years ago (because of Interview With The Vampire), so I ended up seeing a ton of his films.

Overall, Top Gun, Risky Business, Interview With The Vampire, Rain Man and A Few Good Men come to mind as ones I particularly liked. Top Gun is my favorite by far. It's got to get points because of how much of an iconic classic film it now is regardless of demented critics or box office. It certainly lasted in pop-culture. Legend gets points for being extremely visually interesting (talk about glitter).

I can watch Top Gun until the cows come home. I'll never get tired of it. The music alone makes it impossible not to like.

I actually really do want to see Valkyrie.

That was hilarious. Where did that come from?

Re: Ranking Tom Cruise Movies Best to Worst [using the CBOOIMDB system

I think the MTV Movie Awards. It's on the Mission: Impossible II DVD.

Yes, that's where it's from. They did similar spoofs for Batman Begins and The Matrix Reloaded, both of which are on their respective DVDs, as well.
