Agreed. It's an old fashioned, Saturday matinee, kid's adventure flick--which is just what a PHANTOM movie ought to be.

Pirates and Back to the Future (especially BTTF) are much better than the Mummy moveis, but neither are "retro".

I guess I'm giving a retro reviews of adventure movies I guess there must be some confusion

I thought the gophers were a very good way to start the movie.

They were A way to start the movie, though not necessarily good. I think cutting to the gophers for reaction shots later on in the scene hurts the opening shot in a weird way.

I loved Indy IV but there are 3 or 4 moments that defy explanation. The fascination with CG gophers being one of them.

it means "please leave your expectations at the door, this is something else". In both cases, though, most people did not.

I think I can safely say that the gophers were not intended to say that but rather the fact that Spielberg/Lucas thought it'd be funny.

Still for the record:

Opening shot = Fine
Opening shot+double taking gophers+gopher looking at Indy = Not Fine
