Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LXG

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Of the movies I've seen, The Mummy Returns and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are the bottom of the barrel. Though I can imagine The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor being worse than Returns because of Rob Cohen.

Does Van Helsing count as this type of movie? That would be at the bottom too.

I'll bite you...Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was one of the worst major blockbusters of the last decade. Temple of Doom trumps it, curbs it, kicks it while its down and then pees on its bloated corpse.

Anyone who claims it's a good movie should be embarrassed of themselves.

Whatever you do, don't ask me how I really feel about it. ;)

Pah!

Pah, I say!

And when you bite me, make sure you go for the top of my head. That's easily the meatiest part of my body.

Any Indiana Jones movie > All other adventure movies

Too easy.

1. The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior. ;)

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Anyone who thinks Temple of Doom is better than The Mummy, imo, has a screw loose. Unless you think Mrs. Spielberg screaming and whining for two hours is the biggest fun since the Gutenberg press, of course.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Heh...I feel the exact opposite. Anyone who thinks The Mummy is a good movie must have suffered from hysterical blindness and deafness while watching it. That movie was painfully bad.

Someone should go back in time and stop Steven Sommers.

Having not seen The Mummy, I cannot comment. However, Willie's screaming gave Lego Indy one of the most original character attacks ever in a video game.

Coherent story + great production values + funny script + tight editing, with no extraneous or overlong scenes + great performances + Brendan Fraser + Rachel Weisz + Rachel Weisz in a nightie doing her native accent (I hate it when she plays American) + unique tone ≥ a good movie. It may not be for everyone, but it excels at what it is, imho.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

I still to this day cannot fathom how Temple of Doom is so well liked by almost everyone. It is a real clunker. Terrible deus-ex-machina plotting, the most annoying leading lady know to man, a kid side-kick beyond irritating. And that's just scratching the surface. (Sounds like I'm describing a SW prequel, doesn't it?) :D

it even makes Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look like masterpiece theater. And *that* is impressive!

Don't just remember Temple of Doom with rose-colored glasses. Actually pull out that DVD - and watch it. You'll be amazed. And not in a good way.

I would certainly rate The Mummy higher as well, even though it is a very flawed film as well.

Actually, I did remember The Temple of Doom with rose-colored glasses...but in the opposite direction. I recall it being absolutely horrible, but I watched it again and I thought it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. I actually like Short Round and there were only a few instances when I wanted to really smack Willie. It's not nearly as good as the other three films, I agree, but it's not that bad either.

Plus Temple of Doom probably has the most spectacular last reel of any adventure movie, with the escape sequence leading to the mine carts sequence leading to the rope bridge sequence.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

No rose colored glasses for Temple of Doom here. I watched it not that long ago and had a great time. Just a fun movie from beginning to end.

And while Willie was certainly no Marion she was certainly better than Elsa from Last Crusade.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Here's my list, best to worst. What's yours? And what, if any, films do you think are similarly themed enough to warrant inclusion? (I skipped Tomb Raider because it's not set in the fedora-era past.)

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Mummy
3. IJ and The Last Crusade
4. IJ and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
7-8: Completely awful tie: IJ and the Temple of Doom and The Mummy Returns

Mind explaining to me how the bolded movies qualify as being "retro."

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

I agree. Just because they're set in the past doesn't make them retro.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Huh??? Please explain how the Indiana Jones movies is more "retro" than the Mummy movies?
