Here's my list, best to worst. What's yours? And what, if any, films do you think are similarly themed enough to warrant inclusion? (I skipped Tomb Raider because it's not set in the fedora-era past.)

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Mummy
3. IJ and The Last Crusade
4. IJ and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
7-8: Completely awful tie: IJ and the Temple of Doom and The Mummy Returns

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Besides THE SHADOW, I'd add THE PHANTOM, THE ROCKETEER, and SKY CAPTAIN.

The Mummy
The Rocketeer
Project A, if it counts
IJ & tKotCS
IJ & tLC
IJ & tToD
The Shadow
Sky Captain
The Phantom
LXG
The Mummy Returns

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Amazingly, I haven't seen any of The Mummy films. It's just one of those random things I've never gotten around to, as many films as I've seen.

As such:
1.) Raiders
2.) Last Crusade
3.) Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (I loved the hell out of this movie, INCLUDING the damn fridge scene, so people can just bite me)
4.) Temple of Doom
5.) The Rocketeer
6.) The Shadow
7.) The Phantom/Sky Captain (both were pretty damn awful)

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

I'll bite you...Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was one of the worst major blockbusters of the last decade. Temple of Doom trumps it, curbs it, kicks it while its down and then pees on its bloated corpse.

Anyone who claims it's a good movie should be embarrassed of themselves.

Whatever you do, don't ask me how I really feel about it. ;)

1. Raiders
2. The Shadow
3. Last Crusade
4. The Mummy
5. The Phantom

7. Temple of Doom
8. LXG
9. The Rocketeer
10. Sky Captain

Still haven't seen INDY 4 or MUMMY 3 yet.

I love how you think liking a movie (that you don't like) is a considered to be a character flaw.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

I don't.

Liking a piss poor, very badly made movie is a character flaw. It's ignorance, if you truly believe it's good and don't just like it because, like even I do sometimes, it's just so horrible.

There are lots of movies I don't like that others do that I understand.

:)

4. IJ and The Last Crusade
5. The Shadow
6. The Rocketeer
7. IJ and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
8. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
9. The Mummy Returns
10. King Solomon's Mines (the Richard Chamberlain version)*
11. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
12. The Phantom
13. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

I suppose Van Helsing is too 19th century to qualify. What about "High Road to China"? Not fantasy enough? I dunno.

*Tacky b-movie, but enjoyably bad at times. There was a sequel I never saw.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Wow, I surprised that a lot of people didn't like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I thought it was a wonderful film.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

Sky Captain is a triumph of art direction and design, but, except for a few moments, it's dramatically inert.

Which is a shame because, like Van Helsing, that's a movie I really wanted to like.

Re: Ranking the retro adventure films: Indiana Jones, The Mummy and LX

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark.
2. Other Indiana Jones movies.
3. Other adventure movies.

:wtf:

You may not have liked Indy 4, but if you seriously think that the movie was "very badly made", then you need to get a reality check and really check out some "very badly made" movies.

Indy 4 was a well-constructed movie, from the majority of the acting, direction, music, editing, the pace, the special effects (although the gofers were silly and the ants, surprisingly, a little too cartoony). I liked the story, though I can understand where people might have problems was various aspects of it. There were no massive plot holes, story glitches, or deus ex machinas (at least when compared to the earlier films).

If you want to see really "badly made movies" go watch something by Ed Wood or go rent Highlander 2: The Quickening (or anything that was riffed on MST3K.

Additionally, liking something is very much in the eye of the beholder. Looking down on somebody in, quite frankly, a snobbish and non-joking way, because they found enjoyment in a movie that you didn't says more about you than the person who actually liked the movie.

Wow, I surprised that a lot of people didn't like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I thought it was a wonderful film.

Sky Captain was such a disappointment for me. I was so looking forward to that movie for many months (which is rare for me as I usually only hotly anticipate movies that I already have a familiarity with such as Star Trek or Indy, for example). I thought the first half was really good and enjoyable, but felt the second half was excruciatingly slow paced, which kinda killed the movie for me.

Says the guy who likes the shitfest that is Temple of Doom.

4. Last Crusade

I would never sully the Indy flicks by including the crapfest Mummy movies on a list with them.
