Rank the first seasons... (updated through 2023)

I started this thread before - but with a lot more qualifying shows now (and, I assume, the spoiler embargo is lifted on all) I think we should try again.

Edit - sorry mods, didn't realise Prodigy's first season ended so recently; feel free to add the spoiler tag to the thread.

1. TOS - For the sheer number of excellent episodes (although of course, there are a few clangers).
2. SNW - At first glance, the best Trek show of the streaming era.
3. DISCO - Exciting, bold, creative, mature, and with such promise for the future.
4. DS9 - Not great but at least it had "Duet" and the best pilot episode of Trek.
5. LD - Enjoyable fluff.
6. VOY - TNG-lite.
7. TNG - Comical at times, but I tend to enjoy the genuine efforts to render space as strange, bizarre, lonely. Occasionally so bad it's good.
8. PIC - Started off well, fell into mediocrity.
9. ENT - Just too stale.

Not seen - The Animated Series, Prodigy

^ If you describe VOY as 'TNG-lite' why do you rank it higher than TNG itself? Just curious.

TNG-lite in terms of the whole of TNG; TNG itself hadn't yet become TNG in its first season.

To clarify, I'm ranking JUST the first seasons.

Cool idea. Here is my list, and a brief view on my rankings.

1. TOS - so many classics.

2. SNW - by FAR, the best live action series currently.

3. DS9 - much better than people give it credit for. "DUET" alone elevates it.

4. VGR - space feels dangerous, and overall the season is more cohesive... especially when you watch it with the 4 holdover episodes in production order.

5. TNG - better than many say, the cinematography, music, bold story choices, and other things really help the season. The latter part, they really started to find themselves.

6. LDS - a fun season.

7. PROD - much better show than it should be.

8. ENT - while there were more mediocre ideas used, at least the crew had a sense of wonder and awe at exploring.

9. PIC - the only justification for this season is the final scene of Picard and Data.

10. TAS - "YESTERYEAR" alone assures this season never gets last place.

11. DISCO - easily the worst first season in the franchise. Just all over the place.

1. TOS - Best season of TOS and it's amazing how everything's there in full force right from the start without warmup.
2. DS9 - Not DS9's best but a very solid season. Hasn't quite found its own format yet, but again most of the cast is great right from the start. The Odo/Quark pairing even worked better here than later.
3. PRO - Caught me by surprise, great start and I can't wait to see more.
4. VOY - Not great, but it's ok I guess. Not really much worse than any later season imo.
5. TAS - It can be fun if you can roll with the goofiness and laughable "animation". Some great music though!
6. LD - Was really good later in the season, but is dragged down by the weak early episodes.
7. SNW - Lukewarm. Rarely bad but also never very interesting.
8. TNG - A lot of shadow, but also a fair bit of light. Not good but also not the worst.
9. PIC - Messy.
10. ENT - Tired.
11. DIS - Really messy. Not the worst season of Trek overall, but to me it was the most disappointing because I had such high hopes before the pilot aired.

1. TOS: I don’t think anything needs to be said here.
2. DSC: Right when Trek needed something whacky, off-formula, and risky…DSC came through with a flawed but massively fun revival.
3. SNW: Mostly awesome, occasionally questionable, always worth a look.
4. PRO: Amazing work for what was supposed to be a “kids show.” Tons of heart and great storytelling.
5. PIC: Has amazing moments and some low spots as well. This probably could be higher, but seeing what they’ve done this season ticks it down a bit.
6. TNG: I honestly like TNG S1. It’s weird, otherworldly, fun, and uneven, but in a great way.
7. DS9: Ok, now we are getting into “not a good season” territory. This was just kind of a bland set of episodes. There was nothing wrong, but very little memorable. Especially disappointing because the pilot was sooooo damn good.
8. VOY: See DS9, but with a weaker pilot.
9. TAS: Try as I might, I can’t get into it.
10. ENT: The show became better, but S1 was……..rough.
11. LD: Not my thing. Even worse than “I don’t like it” is “I don’t care about it” and that’s where I’m at here.

Not going to rank them outright, because I've watched some more than others.

TOS - Very good. It laid the groundwork for Trek being Trek, even if I never got used to the cheesiness.

TNG - Underrated. It was a season of growing pains, but it had its moments.

DS9 - Surprisingly strong. It was not well regarded among Trekkies early on because it was different, but you see the show's dynamic forming: conflict, the series best friendship in the early stages, and focus on all characters.

VOY - Uneven. The show's initial premise (set up in TNG and DS9) didn't pan out. Half of B'Elanna's character growth happened in one episode, leaving her far less to do in the other 160. Time travel seemed more common here. But there were some enjoyable efforts.

ENT - Also uneven. Not a lot of episodes I bother rewatching here.

DSC - I petered out around the 9th or 10th episode.

PIC - Darker and drearier than I like my Trek, though it had some strong episodes. And Data's end still gets me.

LD - Like watching a fanfiction parody. And not a bad thing. The first season finale was one of the best.

PRO - This was great work. I like both Janeways, Murf, and Rok-tak, and even Dal is starring to grow on me.

SNW - Very strong. Anson Mount's Pike is incredibly charismatic, and it combines great writing with modern FX. And I care about the characters.

I will give it a shot, though I am not sure comparing 29 or 26 episode seasons to 10 episode seasons is entirely fair. Or one hour ouve action to half-hour cartoons.

A. Tier One: Superior

1. TOS. 29 episodes (+ the Cage).

YMMV, but I don't think this is particularly close. So many absolute classics: "City on the Edge of Forever," "Space Seed," "The Enemy Within," "Balance of Terror," "The Menangerie Parts 1 & 2," "Arena," "The Corbomite Manuever," "Devil in the Dark," and "A Taste of Armageddon" all rate that high for me. And there are probably another 10 (or more) that are near classic or at least still very enjoyable and/or good fun. "Where No Man Has Gone Before," "The Gallileo Seven," and "This Side of Paradise" are in the first category for me. And in the second: "The Naked Time," "Mudd's Women," "Dagger of the Mind," "The Conscience of the King," "Shore Leave," "The Squire of Gothos," "Tomorrow is Yesterday," "The Return of the Archons," and "Errand of Mercy."
----------------------

B. Tier 2: Excellent

2. SNW1. 10 episodes.

A very strong debut. If there were more episodes, it coukd have been in the top tier with TOS.
------------------------

C. Tier 3: Very Good/Good

3. DISCO1. 15 episodes.

Did not quite stick the landing, but overall very promising start. Redesigned Klingons bothered me not one whit.

4. DS9. 20 episodes.

On review, stronger than I remembered.

5. VOY1. 16 episodes.

Ditto. "Caretaker" was a fine first installment. "Parallax" & "Time and Again" were better than I remembered. "Eye of the Needle" was heartwarming. "Emanations" was a quality episode. "Prime Emanations" was a great shoe in the other foot episode. "Jettel" was good but heavy.
6. PRO1. 20 episodes.
7. PIC1. 10 episodes.
8. LD1. 10 episodes.

I think the cartoons punched above their weight more and came clisest to maximizing their potential.
------------

D. Tier 4: Had its moments

9. TNG1. 26 episodes.
10. ENT1. 26 episodes.
11. TAS. 16 episodes.

From Favorite to Least Favorite

Lower Decks: After rewatching I just had a lot of fun with it.

DS9: It was inconsistent, but it had far more better episodes than bad. It also was quick to decide what kind of series it needed to be

Discovery: Upon rewatching, Discovery really did have a nice first season. The themes of the Mirror universe arc really resonated and episodes like the Magic episode and Into the Forest I go stand out as some of the best episodes of the series.

Star Trek: It was the first and had so many great episodes. I think if I had watched it as it originally aired, it might have been higher.

Strange New Worlds: I need to rewatch this series. The further we get from it the more I think it was just...there, but at the time I really liked it.

Picard: It was better on a rewatch, but I still won't like Stardust City Rag

Prodigy: It had ups and downs, but it was more up. I wish it hadn't been broken up though.

Voyager: There's some good episodes here but it was TNG lite

Enterprise: See Voyager, even though it introduced the Andorians and what Enterprise did with the Andorians was pretty special.

TNG: I think I only like four episodes this season: Heart of Glory, 11001001, Arsenal of Freedom, and Conspiracy.

TOS - for having to start the ball rolling, the number of strong episodes (despite nitpicks) is amazing
DS9 - surprisingly good
LD - blew me away with its ideas and wit. Feels more like Futurama than Rick&Morty in tone, but is still distinctly a wild and fun version of a Trek-centric universe. I rank it above TNG, even though I'd rewatched TNG1 more times. Maybe it's a virtual tie...
TNG - a very mixed bag, but I return to it far more often than later years (5-7) and more than most of the other series. Even most of the clunker ones. There is some creativity at work, warts and all. It's a teddy bear and warm down comforter. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
VOY - some good ideas could have been held back a year, and they merge the two factions too easily. Many ideas just seem humdrum and by the numbers.

DSC - good ideas let down badly, but - dang - the new Harry Mudd is pretty awesome and Tilly starts out good
ENT - uh... Well, um... like DSC it's a prequel, but DSC's alternate timeline origin elevates it just enough. Prequels are almost never my thing; I don't care to know what happened 100 years before Kirk and, as was said above, it's definitely stale. Can't even accuse DSC of being stale...

haven't seen enough of SNW or PROD.

DS9 - Fantastic cast, gets daring with the Trek formula, expands wonderfully on what's come before, executes very well given that the show was still finding its feet.
TOS - Imaginative, foundational, classic, fun, amazing hit-to-miss ratio.
PRO - Developing a sci-fi show meant to appeal primarily to kids without talking down to the general audience is tough; it means losing some of the tools out of the writers' toolbox while still writing up to standard. The Prodigy team has delivered with flying colors with their first season, despite that hobble. We've gotten well-rounded characters and plots that, though simplified, are the essence of Trek.
LDS - Comedy is hard, comedy as a love letter even moreso. Despite some uneven early episodes, Lower Decks largely succeeded. Unfortunately, those episodes make up about 30% of the season, which is why I didn't rank it higher.
SNW - Strong cast, good ideas, lots of fun. Felt like a couple of major character threads were paced oddly for the number of episodes the writers knew they were working with, though.
TNG - Full points for boldly going and taking chances. Not so much for the rough execution.
DSC - Ambitious, but messy.
PIC - Mostly just messy. Lots of good ideas and characters given no room to breathe, muddled themes, and a story that face planted at the end.
VOY - Interesting setup, but didn't live up to its potential.
ENT - So reluctant to acknowledge the success of other Treks that it didn't manage to wrap S1 with any identity of its own.

Haven't seen TAS.

Season 1?

S Tier - Picard
A Tier - TOS, Discovery
B Tier - Prodigy, SNW
C Tier - DS9, Voyager
M Tier - TNG, TAS, Lower Decks
E Tier - Enterprise
F Tier - N/A (if we were doing Season 2, ENT would go here)

"M" stands for Mercy, since a D would make it sound like I don't like them.

TOS - So many great episodes in this season! I love it.
SNW - Not perfect, but I loved this. It's a great tribute to TOS, whilst doing its own thing.
PRO - I wasn't expecting to love this show after I'd already written it off in the back of my mind when I heard the kids in space concept.
PIC - A pretty good start, with some meandering episodes. I did love the end with Data. Ichrb's death makes me want to hurl though.
DS9 - Emissary is my favourite Berman pilot and there are some great episodes in here. It does better when it's trying to be its show.
DIS - The Klingon War was portrayed in a strangely dull way, but the cast was great. The MU was better, but what a stupid end to it all.
LD - It took a few episodes to stop annoying me, but it warmed up nicely.
VOY - Somewhat uneven, but this season seems to show the spirit of what the producers intended with this show.
ENT - Outside of 8-10 episodes, mediocre, but at least had the ongoing strife from Vulcan as a focus.
TNG - Yipes! Growing pains definitely evident here whilst the products were finding their feet. The music here, however, is something else.

Ooh tough one.

Although my top choice is a no brainier.

1. TOS - season one is just classic after classic, and has an atmosphere of adventure, freshness and excitement that was rarely matched in later Trek. It’s not just great Trek, it’s truly ICONIC television history. I love it and have watched it more than any other Trek.

2. DS9 - I’m going with DS9 even though they had a couple of stinkers (“The Passenger” is far worse that “Move Along Home”, which is at least kind of entertaining) and, for a while, a notable lack of energy and drive. It boasts the greatest pilot of any Trek show (Emissary is better than many of the Trek movies IMO), even if, afterward, it kind of spends a while trying to find its own identity and style. By the season end, however, we got two knockout and incredibly mature, sophisticated and beautiful episodes which elevate the entire season. “Duet” deserved an award; it was a phenomenal piece of television.

3. DSC - sorry, not sorry! despite the outcry and deluge of hate, this made me excited for Trek for the first time in nearly two decades. It has ambition, edge, a thrilling pace and it takes chances, even if it doesn’t always entirely gel together. Lorca was fucking fantastic and I enjoyed the twist-based nature of the plot. I hate the Klingon redesign, although it’s not a deal killer for me, and I wish the producers hadn’t watered things down with each subsequent year. The show would lose its edge and bold energy somewhat. For all the behind the scenes chaos it’s amazing to me this season was as enjoyable as it was.

4. TNG - yeah, I know objectively season one is all over the map, with some really terrible episodes and stilted characters, but, as with DSC…I LOVE the freshness, the boldness, the sense of edge which faded with later, more “comfortable” seasons. The music is fantastic still! Maybe I partly love it for nostalgic reasons too; along with TOS, it’s part of my “comfort Trek” viewing.

5. PRO - I’ve yet to rewatch this and I was sceptical at first (it initially has the look and feel of a Star Wars spin-offs, not Trek) but this show’s first season is compelling, charming, funny, sweet and the serialised plot arc is handled adeptly. I found myself growing fond of the characters and looking forward to more. While they aren’t very good at human faces (that’s meant to be Chakotay? That’s …Jellico?!) much of the animation is beautiful to look at. Good music too.

6. PIC - I never quite got the hate for s1 because for me, it was an enjoyable ride from the very start. I found s1 audacious, bold and filled with potential, most of which was sadly not to be realised (with a cast that was basically ditched by the end of season two and season three being a completely different—albeit better—series in my view). This felt like prestige tv Trek, with some cool new characters and an intriguing premise. I was hooked. Things did falter midway through. I still hate “Stardust City Rag” and find it horribly bleak and gratuitously violent. The death of Hugh is was a sore point and the Borg were utterly wasted. The planet of androids was a goofy concept better suited to TOS style, yet I still found the Picard/Data scenes utterly moving in the finale and didn’t find the AI plot as objectionable as others. In all, I was satisfied.

7. SNW - I’m currently rewatching season one, and, halfway through, it’s reinforcing my mixed feelings about this show. On the whole I definitely like it, I love the casting and it has buckets of confidence and panache right out of the gate. It is also refreshing to get back to the episodic format. I do find it has pacing issues (some episodes drag, frankly) and an unfortunate tendency on the part of the writers to simply riff on (or remake) past classic episodes, and the tone doesn’t quite sit with me; a little too MCU, and “quippy”. Less smug quips and more original storytelling and I’ll be happy going into season two. I’ll see how my opinion changes as I finish my rewatch (and get through the two stinkers, “Serene Squall” and “Elysian Kingdom”).

8. VOY - actually a decent enough first season, if not spectacular. There are some good offerings and it does succeed in conveying a tone of danger and desperation. The characters are mainly fine at this point, yet something just doesn’t quite ignite for me. While a rewatch last year made me appreciate this show a little more, it’s still hampered by its tendency to simply be TNG 2.0. It had so much potential but they dial it right back in the final scene of the pilot where they give the Maquis Starfleet uniforms (what if they didn’t WANT those institutionalised pyjamas?). Much potential that was only sporadically realised.

9. ENT - some good ideas, and I initially had some hope for this show, but, man, it’s a slog. I rewatched the first season about ten years ago and just couldn’t make it onto the second, which I recall getting even more boring. It’s pretty basic and dull as Trek goes; it’s the weakest set of characters Trek ever gave us and the creative team were just clearly burnt out by this point. There is potential and some good moments, but it’s not something I’d care to rewatch again.

10. LDS - i was initially excited about this show, as Futurama is one of my all time favourite shows and I thought this might be Trek’s answer to that. Unfortunately, the humour was rather too hyperactive and obnoxious for my taste, and I found Mariner absolutely insufferable in the earlier episodes. The show is curious thing; a parody that doesn’t quite know it’s a parody. The show does improve, and I watch it, but sometimes not until days or weeks have passed after a release. I’m delighted so many fans love it, but this is a curious beast I still don’t quite know how to place it in Trek lore. I’m glad it exists, but it’s not quite for me.

  1. Lower Decks - Doesn't really have any bad episodes but it does have a couple of classics. Plus it just clicks with me personally.
  2. Discovery - Its consistency got it to the top half of my rankings, but episodes like Into the Forest I Go and What's Past is Prologue are what pulled it up to second place. I mean it's ridiculous yeah, but it commits to its absurdity so hard that I got dragged along with it.
  3. Picard - It's an alright season with a really great first episode and (most of) Nepenthe to balance out its grimdark misery. Even the ninja elf is endearing.
  4. Prodigy - The series is a bit too childish for me a lot of the time, but there's some solid writing here, an above-average arc plot, and a couple of the episodes are real stand outs.
  5. TOS - Features some of the most iconic episodes in science fiction. And The Alternative Factor. It's the highest ranking of the 'mixed bag' episodic anthology series for me, and if I was rating the seasons on their 10 best stories it'd be in first place.
  6. Voyager - It's a fairly okay first season, benefitting from the experience of the veteran Trek writers and some actual serialisation, without reaching the heights the series would manage later.
  7. SNW - I found this very frustrating to watch as it seems to celebrate Star Trek and contradict Star Trek with the same enthusiam. It's like watching a kid cheerfully taking a hammer to your season box sets. I wish I could write this season off as 'early-installment weirdness' but I don't know yet whether the series is going to get better later on.
  8. TNG - This season's a real mess, but it does pick up in the second half as the chaos in the writers' room settled down a bit.
  9. TAS - Rarely very good, but often pretty creative and fascinatingly weird.
  10. DS9 - Starts well, ends great, it's just those 15 episodes in the middle that are a struggle to get through. It's got the right actors on the right sets, but they're not doing anything and there's nothing developing.
  11. Enterprise - This was a painful season to endure. Probably my least favourite season of any Star Trek ever. Well, except for TAS season 2. That said, it does have Andorian Incident, Shuttlepod One and Shockwave.

1. TOS: Curious that one of Star Trek's best seasons was one where the universe was the least defined

2. SNW: Solid consistency, though that's easier with 10 episodes

3. Picard: Had it's problems, but still some good stuff there

4. Discovery: I think I can say it was at least better than season 3

5. TAS: I’m kind of cheating since I include the whole season here, though I’m not sure it would change it much. Not great, but still some fun episodes.

6. LD: A bit on the overrated side imo, but still decent

7. Voyager

8. DS9: At this point it was sort of an inferior TNG in a different setting

9. Enterprise

10. TNG: Star Trek’s weakest season, though it did pick up a little in the last third or so

Haven’t seen enough Prodigy. Kind of odd they still called it one season (yes, I did the same with TAS) since it went over a year.

To be fair, I haven't seen every first season episode of Voyager, and I can't say I've seen every single one for TOS and TAS either, but from what I have seen, here are my rankings:

TOS
PROD
DISCO
SNW
DS9
ENT
LD
VOY
TNG
TAS
PIC
