ok--at the risk of exposing myself for the newbie I am--for the love of all that is pure and holy, what is the deal with the sombraros? Did it evolve as some kind of in-joke, or does it have more significance? Please be courteous and stone me with medium-sized rocks only. That'd be swell.

Kirk was on the Farragut when Captain Garrovik got killed by the cloud creature, and Kirk blamed himself for hesitating and "letting" his Captain
die. Guys--you are missing the larger "canon" issues involved here, and frankly, I'm shocked--shocked I tell you!

THANK YOU! Those posts were hilarious. I see the world in a clearer perspective now--it all makes sense. I came to this thread as a boy, but I leave it as a man. Someone's gonna hafta photoshop my AV when I'm allowed to put it up--it will need a sombrero, too!

Well, precedence for this type of assinine command decision making has been set. Should I mention Wesley Crusher?

I noticed Chekov doesn't seem to have any rank stripes. Which could mean they are following TOS in not giving ensigns any insignia. Then again maybe Chekov starts off as enlisted?

So far, we have seen Chekov in the stripeless possible-Ensign shirt (on the bridge), Spock in his usual two-stripe Commander shirt (beaming down to Vulcan), and briefly also Kirk with the |:| stripes of Captain (on the bridge). And then there's the "family portrait" on the bridge, with everybody save Kirk wearing their usual TOS rank stripes.

So apparently, most of the action in the movie takes place in a timeframe other than "they are right out of the Academy" after all... Which may leave crucial years of Kirk's youth unexplored, and many a fan relieved when his or her pet theory about sorting out all the contradictions doesn't get contradicted.

I dig the short-sleeved uniform variants - but where do the rank insignia go in those uniforms? The ladies can wear them as ankle bracelets, but that's not an option for those gentlemen who choose not to wear a miniskirt.

Are the shoulder seams the rank stripes for the T-shirts? That is, does the single seam on Uhura and on Chekov's fellow helm console operator mean Lieutenant rank? What would a Captain's T-shirt look like?

Lets be honest Star Trek has always messed up rank insignia, with the exception of the guy who designed the second movie uniforms.

I noticed that a woman is wearing a long sleeve skirt uniform to Chekov's right in the trailer and she is next to an "old" guy, is he a Senior rating?
