Rani

well this is a question about the sja character. does she seem like she is who she says she is or there's something more to her? why would the creators make a rani character when they know there has been another char before named rani unless they're somehow linked? i mean with all the names in the world they somehow picked rani without any connection to the rani? hmmm... i dunno. there's just something odd about this girl. maybe we'll see her pocket watch in the season finale along with the master's ring. it's not beyond the possibility that she is the rani and she manufactured her "parents". as she said, she's got this unexplainable insatiable curiosity about everything.

They named her Rani because they knew people on the internet would wet themselves thinking she was THE Rani.

I think it's pretty obvious she's not, especially since Sarah Jane never met The Rani, it'd be a pretty obscure way to bring her back.

In a news article in SFX Magazine a couple of months back, Russell T commented that it was absolute coincidence, and of all the characters they might conceivably be interested in bringing back, the Rani was not one of them.

My boyfriend lives in London, and he says that Rani is actually a very common name there.

But didn't RTD suggest it could have been the Rani who took the Master's ring at the end of Last of the Time Lords?

Yes, I'm aware he was just joking. I'm just messing around myself.

DWM #400 stated clearly that this wasn't THE Rani from the Classic Series...

Rani is a real and pretty common Indian name, you know.

Obviously RTD knew full well the effect using it would have but it's just him having a laugh.

sometimes I think RTDs does this so he watch the fan forums explode.

That or RTDs is given us all major fanwank (yeah I said it)

As others have pointed out, Rani is a common Indian name, which means queen/princess. That's probably why The Rani chose it as her title.
That the name's turned up twice in Who is only significant if you reckon every other reoccurance of a name is equally significant (in which case, who's got a theory on the connection between Sarah Jane Smith, Sara Kingdom, and Mickey Smth. Not to mention all the Joneses. Oh, and maybe Colonel Masters in The Tomorrow People was a previously unsuspected incarnation of you-know-who. After all, the planets mentioned in Shakespeare Code are all planets from The Tomorrow People, so the continuities must overlap).
BTW: the Jewish equivalent of Rani, as a name, happens to be Sarah (same meaning). So can we start a rumour that actually Sarah Jane is a regenerated Rani posing as one of the Doctor's old friends? I think it's more likely than Rani Chandra being our favourite 1980s amoral scientist. ;-)

Given the whole 'how gay is the master" questions from last year, then maybe that lad deserved to be called the Rani instead of the Rani or Rani. Seriously though, if you're going to "manufacture" parents, why would you make them so dreadfully dull?

Of course!

Considering what happened in the second season of Kyle XY, I think it's kind of obvious that Rani herself was manufactured by the Bane and it's all just the first step in some terribly convoluted scheme to recover Luke.

If Mum and dad turn out to be anything than exactly what they appear to be, I can imagine that Clyde would adore to have Principle Slayer to his resume, because lets face it, those two are spoiling for a show down.

lol you cant steal plot lines from this Karl XY and apply them to the SJA, that said I should really check if Rani has a belly button or not, just to be on the safe side. ;)

Television got turned on it's ear over I Dream of Jeanie's belly button. Some said that it might end the world as we know it. but that was then and this is now. Just because the importance of the viewability of a belly button has been marginalised in recent years it doesn't mean that it still doesn't plays an important part in the "oggling proccess".

The actress may be 18, but the character isn't wamdue

lol the end of the world, I thought that happend at the Superbowl and Janet Jackson.

and yeah I guess checking the actress wouldnt quite work, as im sure who actor who plays Luke, doesnt have his filled in, when he is wearing clothes are top.

By itself I dont see the belly button as a sexual thing.

Q: Why did the Blondes belly button hurt?

A: her Boyfriend was blonde too.

:)

Many parts of the human body are pretty without being overtly sexual, but you obviously haven't seen 9 and a half weeks recently.

9 & a half weeks, no I havnt. Ill look up the plot late SJA now

but yeah I think hair is pretty, but not sexual (unless its red)

Oh no.

Rani might not be the Rani on her own? What if she was split into three Pieces?

A little too catholic for their tastes, but there has to be something nefarious abou these people...

ZYGONS!
