Just got back from seeing RANGO, the CGI movie from Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) starring Johnny Depp.
It's quite good! It's definitely not "just" a kid's movie. In fact, at times it's pretty dark, violent, and risque.
The most amazing thing about it is the CGI. It is shockingly photo-realistic. It actually looks like it was really filmed. The hairs, the pores, the clothing texture, the sunlight, the water, it all looks absolutely real with an amazing eye for detail. The body motion and expressions are also completely real (as we've seen in the ads, they actually filmed all the actors with tracking dots as a reference for the entire movie).
It had a good story (albeit one that's a total "homage" of Chinatown) and amazing action scenes. It's also quite funny; not in a childish way but in a way for everybody. Quite a few sexual jokes too (I wonder if the kids will get those?).
Every CGI movie should look this good. Absolutely real.
