Random websites not loading

I'm guessing this is a problem with my isp, but I figured I should ask here anyways. Some random websites are no longer loading for me, the most annoying one being yahoo and yahoo mail. Initially I thought it may be spyware related, but then the other computer on this same network can't reach yahoo either. Untill just a little while ago Trekbbs was also not loading, but now it is. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what sites are and are not working. I just checked speakeasy speed test, and that isn't working either. The sites that do work, work at full speed.

I've restarted the systems and rebooted the router and cable modem and things haven't changed. The only firewalls I'm running are the hardware firewall on the router and the one that's part of avast antivirus.

Urg, I was in the middle of writing an email when this happened too, one that I've been procrastinating on. Grrr, stupid internets. So anyone have any idea what the deal is here, or if there's anything I can do about it?

I had a really odd morning with web access as well. Some site not loading, weird access times.

Anyway, mostly back to normal now. The internet is wild beast, don't take it for granted.

Sounds to me like a DNS resolution problem (I presume all you get for these is 404 - Not Found errors), so you're probably right to blame your ISP (especially as both your network machines are having this issue. Having said that, it might be Yahoo that's having the odd problem as some of their web servers aren't reachable from my PC either.....

Capt Vulcan, I had something similar to what you describe happen close to three months ago. Roughly 80% of the sites I tried to reach (including most of my regular stops) were returning "page not found" errors and one of those broadband speed testing sites was acting as if two-thirds of the major cities in the U.S. couldn't be reached at all (though cities elsewhere seemed mostly OK.) tracert tests mostly got as far as my ISP's regional hub/node/whatsit in Los Angeles and timed out. I was only able to communicate through one BBS (not this one), LiveJournal and LJ's message feature. Google was so unreliable that I set up Dogpile as the Home Page, in order to get anything done at all.

After 30+ hours of me going bugshit trying to figure out what was going on, the problem just went away by itself. I never did find out what was actually behind it.

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me. Yesterday, it all just came back like nothing was wrong. During that time, some sites worked at full speed, others didn't work at all. It was kind of frustrating. I actually had to use my cell phone as my primary email portal for a couple of days.

Your ISP is almost certainly at fault in that case - likely a fault with their routers or gateway servers.

I'm having similar issues at the moment. Myspace and Facebook in particular, and infrequently (enough so though that its quite frustrating) will not load.
