Ralph McQuarrie has passed away.

People often talk about how they went into medicine or astrophysics because of their favorite Trek character. But, how many people went into the design trades like Architecture (like me) because they were inspired by Mr. McQuarrie's work? I spent many hours as a kid teaching myself to draw surrounded by his work. With all the "Star Wars" knock-offs of the late '70s and early '80s, you've got to wonder how much modern sic-fi owes to this guy's ideas. A visionary.

This is a huge loss. His designs were beautiful and iconic.

Changing my avatar in tribute, as I see many others are, too.

I rather liked his Planet of the Titans Enterprise concept. Ken Adam as we know did the study models that found use in STIII (obscured) and in TNG, but the saucer was really...er..fat. Ken Adam did a lot of work for the Bond films--but I always wanted to see Ralphs painting brought to life--sleek saucer, superdetailed secondary hull.

Goodbye Ralph...

Oh, damn. R.I.P.

McQuarrie's work was awesome. He really helped shape Star Wars into a memorable, iconic series.

I still have my Star Wars Portfolio, too. I used to look at it for hours.

I never got my hands on one of those. But I DO have "The Art of Star Wars" from 1978, a brilliant book with pages and pages of illustration by Ralph. That one I poured over for hours and I still dig it out occasionally for a look.

That's a fantastic book, too. :techman:

From the thread over in Fan Art:

I have the massive Art of Ralph McQuarrie book, and it's worth seeking out if you really want a larger sense of his career and work.
Sounds like something to ask for on my birthday. :)

Hard to imagine that Star Wars would have had quite as much appeal as it did, had it not been for his brilliant conceptual art. RIP.

Indeed, it might not have been made at all. The studios may not have always been impressed with the script, but McQuarrie's paintings were worth volumes.

Not just a very talented artist, but a visionary artist. RIP Mr McQuarrie.

This was the first image of the original Star Wars that I remember ever seeing.

Before ever seeing the film, it filled me with joy, and excitement. It was like looking at a dream. A place that was real, but at the same time, just couldn't possibly be.
Nearly 35 years later, none of those feelings have changed when I look at this image, and many others.
For this, I will always be in your debt, Mr. McQuarrie. Thank you for this priceless gift. I cherish it always, as countless others do, as well.

His Star Wars portoflio graced my walls and the walls of so many of my friends. RIP, sir. You illustrated entire worlds for us and they will always live in our memories. Thank you.

Too bad Lucas stole C3-P0 from Metropolis.
