I concur, that was quite disappointing. What started as a really cool premise ended with some very familiar stuff.
Maybe THEY knew from the start they were getting a 2 season order, but c'mon. At least wrap ONE of the storylies up.........I mean I get the symbolic Adam/Eve/Serpent imagery but I feel like I wasted 10 hours now. Like at the end of episode 9 they realized OH SHIT we only have 51 minutes left...ahhhhh fuck it. Let's be artsy!
Seems to be a consistent theme from everybody that I agree with. Liked the beginning then the show starts to drag and then becomes a nonsensical "mystery box" mess at the end. Guess I shouldn't be surprised since its associated with Ridley Scott. Won't be bothering with season 2 myself.
Weird ending, but there are some clues as to what's going on.
The big one is the mention that the Mithraic religion stems from the discovery of some kind of cache of advanced knowledge that allowed them to build necromancers and other devices based around "dark photons" (whatever that means) without really understanding the underlying science. The location of this planet and the means to get there seems to have been part of that cache too. Whether the religion itself also came from directly from it or was the result of human embellishment (or misunderstanding) seems ambiguous.
All that plus the presence of Neanderthals would indicate some controlling intelligence behind all of this. My guess is that the "extinct" serpents are the source of all that knowledge. Knowing a little of what got cut out of 'Prometheus' I'd guess that Scott is re-purposing some of it; going full 'Chariot of the Gods' to tie them into various draconic mythologies (Quetzalcoatl leaps to mind). Only now they're a sterile, essentially extinct species and left behind some kind of mechanism (maybe an AI or stored consciousness that's responsible for all the voices and visions) to try and reignite their genome (hence Mother's pregnancy and the weird 'Not-Engineers' ritual flashback.)

That's exactly my reaction. I watched the season 1 final episode last night and when if was finished I was like "Uhm .... that was .... errr ..... WTF?" It's like they had no idea where they were going or more importantly, what they wanted to do. IT's like someone changed their med's in the writers room. Bezar doesn't begin to describe this episode.

There are serpent bones all over the planet and now we have some AI/God that has brought a new one into existence. And some devolving humans. Other than that, who knows what the plot is.
One of the best new shows of the year, despite a really disappointing ending.
At least season 2 is a go.
Theories are this universe might connect to Alien somehow, and it's not that unlikely in my book.

I'm glad the atheists showed up to kind of mix things up at the end, but I was hoping to see what this disembodied voice was all about...they could have given us one more hint!

I definitely think Ridley's more recent leanings are showing here, kind of like Roddenberry, he seems obsessed about where we originated as humans, and why we are the way we are. My problem is after exploring that in the Alien universes later movies, he tried to satisfy the fan desire for horror and abandoned the interesting questions. Let's hope this series does not do the same thing!

I finished Season 1 last night and I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused and a bit underwhelmed by the season finale, as well as the first season overall.
After the first episode, I was very stoked about the series. I still like the look and feel of it. It's great to be introduced to a new science-fiction universe after all. The actors were pretty good across the board as well. So, it was a very promising start but as I got further into the season the pacing slowed and it felt like it was getting bogged down. There was good character development and twists here and there, along with action/violence to keep my attention, as did the curiosity about all the mysteries, but I also grew impatient.
After the finale was over, I was confused by what I had just seen, and had hoped for a bit more answers about what was going on. I've been looking at You Tube videos to get more explanations. As a geek there's a fun part to getting into the interviews and theories, but also, as a viewer, I would like some questions answered as well in the episode itself.
While watching the series, I felt that this was what Ridley Scott should've done instead of Prometheus. These questions-about artificial intelligence, religion, and the origins of human life-are his interests. I also wish he had saved the Engineers, hammerpedes, and trilobite from Prometheus and Alien Covenant's neomorphs for this series. The Kepler creatures didn't impress me at first, until I learned their true origins so I got the design more.

Though I can't say I'm going to subscribe again to HBO Max to keep up with it. I have yet to watch the series but I am getting definite Garden of Eden vibes from the descriptions I have read.
I watched it, but I don't think I ever watched an episode all the way through in one sitting. I thought I had missed something when I was watching the final episode, but based on some of the posts above I guess it wasn't meant to make any sense?
