Raiders of the Lost Ark returning to theaters... in IMAX!

Yeah, I'm really excited for this. Looks like I have to work on the 15th (When AMC theaters are doing the full series) but I'm going on Friday to IMAX. I might go twice, as another friend might not be able to join us that day. I certainly wouldn't mind a return trip.

I'm really envious of one of my friends, who has never seen the movie before!

The friend who mentioned catching the Friday show hasn't seen it either. It came up Saturday night as we watched college football. The only one she's seen all the way through was Crystal Skull. Now while I don't hate that film like some do I told her if she wants to correct that to call me. It's tentative for Friday but I think she'll like it.

So who all went out this weekend and saw it? I saw it this morning and had a lot of fun. I am aware their are people online complaining about the quality, but it all seemed fine to me. The movie felt different on the big screen, more magical, I think.

I went today and had a crowd of about 150, give/take. Sitting next to me was a family of three and they had their 6yr old son in tow. The father covered his eyes during the finale "face melt" scene. He mildly expressed some fear during the opening and asked about the blood after the "German mechanic" fight scene but he was mostly good during the film and said he liked it.

Quality wise I admit I did expect higher transfer in clarity, sharpness and brightness. This isn't to say I was disappointed with the show. Where it showed the most that I can recall was during the opening jungle scenes and that stock footage at the end, the very end of the Washington Monument and the Mall as Indy comes out of the CIA briefing. Probably another scene somewhere but it doesn't jump out at me right now.

Several people whistling the tune on the way out the door and saw a few Indy themed shirts as well during my show.

Yeah, there were a few parts where the quality seemed to dip, I ignored it mostly because I was getting to see Raiders on the big screen, I think that trumped it.

But yeah, I could see how someone could find fault with the quality. To be honest I was excepting BluRay quality, since that's why the movies back in theaters in the first place.

Went and saw this today with the parents as a birthday present to me (which was yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to go until today) since this was the only one of my three all-time favorite movies I hadn't seen in a theater yet. Yeah, the picture was a little underwhelming, but I just chalk that up to it being a 30+ year old movie. The softness/focus issues, well, that's the 80's for you... The sound was terrific though, especially the 'splosions. But I was happy with the experience overall since I love this film so much!

Did anyone notice that the golden idol had, like, eyes with pupils etc on it? I was like wait a minute, I've never noticed that before! I looked up a picture of the prop in a book and the idol just had solid gold eyes. Am I crazy or is that a new addition or something...?

A quick google search shows pupils on the idol. However I did find some pictures that appeared not to have pupils.

I wonder if they made a few prop idols for the film. Like the one with pupils is the one at the beginning on the alter, then the one without pupils is lighter so Ford could carry it later in the Temple.

I just popped in the DVD and sure enough, it's got pupils in the close-up. So hey, at least I can say I noticed something new in a movie I've seen a bajillion times! :D

I caught it this weekend and really enjoyed it. I was looking for the reflection with the cobra in the Well of Souls, and wondered if they'd removed it.

Now I know. :) Thanks!

The cobra reflection was not in my print either. Seems that has been fixed as it wasn't in the print I saw over Memorial Day weekend either. I doubt they were the same reels so that's good that's been fixed.

I thought that had been fixed years ago for the dvds...

I went on Friday with two friends. I went to the 4PM showing and it was almost empty. It didn't matter though, we had a blast. The image was shaky in a few places, but it was mostly acceptable. The sound was fantastic.

^Yes, the sound was great. We went on Saturday and had a blast. There weren't that many people in the audience, but it was still fun. There are a few shots that are of low quality, like the long shot of Indy and Satipo (you know, for YEARS, I thought his name was Sapito) in the cave, but most of it was really clear.

It was fun hearing the audience recite the dialogue in certain parts, like near the end, when Indy is in D.C., everyone said "TOP. MEN." in unison.

Two 20-somethings did that behind me as well...TOP--MEN.

The non-fight with the sword wielding master where he just shoots him got a good big laugh.

Fixing the cobra for DVD's and fixing it on individual prints I thought would be a different type process.

The cobra's reflection is still there when it rears up in front of Marion though.

Had a great time even though the audience was sparse. I think I might have been the only one quoting half the movie though.(To myself, not aloud)

Had George Lucas had his way with Indiana Jones, we would have gotten speaking monkeys, Indy riding on a rhinozeros fighting a three-story high German supertank, and a Nazi with a robotic machine gun arm, and Indy commanding an army of speaking gorillas in a battle against Germans soldiers.

Budget constraints, VFX limitations and a stronger Spielberg saved us from very horrible films. So I really hope he didn't go apeshit anywhere for the blu ray release.

I have Raiders of the Lost Ark in VHS tape, so give me a reason to spend $12 on a movie ticket if its not in 3D?
