Radioactive shrimp at Walmart...

The Salt Umpire

Captain

Batches of Great Value shrimp sold at Walmart were recalled for unhealthy levels of Cesium-137 this week.

Cesium-137 is an isotope, a radioactive byproduct of power generation at nuclear powerplants, so where were they fishing? Fukushima?

Folks, start paying attention to where your food is sourced. No way of knowing what got by.

Wal Mart already has mutants, so no biggie.

More concerning (to any with weight loss plans)—is this:

…and people thought it was an *apple* that got humans cast out of Eden?….ha!

:shrug:One more in a whole litany of reasons to avoid Wal-Mart.

(FWIW, long ago, I took a vow to never set foot in one, even to save my own life, the only exception being if it's the only way to save somebody else's life. And the closest I've ever been to a Wal-Mart was still at least 10 feet from the entrance, back when I was vacationing on Maui, and the Kahului bus hub was in its parking lot.)

The radiation is what gives the shrimp 🦐 great value.. and lots of flavor 😋

FYI
Radiotrophic fungi are a type of fungus that can use ionizing radiation as an energy source through a process called radiosynthesis. These fungi, which contain the pigment melanin, thrive in high-radiation environments like the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and are being studied for their potential use in radiation shielding for space exploration and for cleaning up radioactive sites.

How the hell does that happen?
Shrimp were apparently loaded into and shipped in containers previously used to transport something with Cesium-137 or at the same time as the source is my best guess. They probably didn't even wash them out between uses. I avoid Wal-Mart, which is freakin' inconvenient here in the South. Thank goodness for Harps.

Sounds like it could be the plot of a Simpsons episode, actually. Homer goes on a fishing trip with Flanders. When he proudly returns with a bunch of shrimp, Marge is shocked to find out most of them have multiple heads and tails, and asks Homer if he was fishing near the reactor, which leads Lisa to an environmental crusade against the power plant.
