Radiation engines?

KJbushway

Commodore
Now I could go research this myself, but to be fair I wouldn't really understand half of it.
Is there any technology already or are they researching, using radiation as an engine for ships in space?
Is it even possible?

The Sun emits radiation and it can be harnessed using solar sails for propulsion.

Certainly, any form of nuclear reactor can be used for electrical power. Actually generating thrust is a bit harder though.

I heard of Synchrotron Radiation Fusion Drive...but don't know what it is really.

Maybe someone here knows more?

You don't seem to know what radiation is or how it can be used.

Isn't that what he just said in his original post?

Sort of. But then he goes on with simply saying "radiation."

I might as well ask how we can make an engine that runs off radio waves. (Which, okay, is radiation.)

It was meant as a broad topic, meaning any type pf radiation. Like I said I could go a research it, but I wouldn't really understand all of it. Now if you want to talk about any type of radiation you like that could be an engine, talk about that. Broad topic, I am not really trying to narrow it down to a simple question, it would defeat the purpose of the thread.

Right I know about solar sails.
But an actual engine.

From Wikipedia: An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert energy into useful mechanical motion.

A solar sail converts solar radiation into useful mechanical motion. I'll grant that may not meet your definition of "engine"-- but if so, you'd better spell out what your definition is. Otherwise, no one will be able to answer.

Alternately, you could just assume the answer is no, which is probably the case anyway.

Your right. It can be any type of Engine that follows along with that definition.
The answer could be No, but it could be a design by someone in the thread.

Okay then: A solar sail follows that definition. So it's not correct to disqualify it like you did earlier. There's your answer.
