Racebending "Akira"

Why even bother keeping the name Akira if so much are being changed?

I can only hope that kids today watching the movie will be interested to seek out the original Akira manga after watching the movie. Though the movie will probably suck...

why even care.... You're not on the corporate board of directors that needs to make a profit in order to make a movie or movies in the future. even if it means you have to use middle american natives in order to drag enough people to the movies to make the movie even profitable to try and make... join the real world.

It's simply a different take on the property. It may be good, it may be bad depending on how well they adapt it to stand on its own merits. I'm sure nothing short of a clone of the original will please purists, but that's generally the case anyhow with these kind of things, IMO.

Personally, I'm expecting it to be similar to the original only in the overall story, with the rest given the Hollywood treatment. I even expect the characters of Tetsuo and Kaneda to be renamed and redesigned in some fashion...

Eh, Japan had a japanese Spider-Man living in Tokyo. Why? Because it was made for a japanese audience. "Racebending" wasn't a big deal then and it shouldn't be a big deal now.

Was his name still Peter Parker, or was it a Japanese name?

Meh - Akira (the anime - I haven't read the manga) was overrated in my opinion anyway, so I wouldn't mind a new take and setting it in Manhattan is more likely to draw a bigger audience. It's not likely it'll be any good anyway, truth be told, but I don't think this is the deal breaker.

Yeah, even with the Fassbender speculation this just seems a seriously flawed approach, to say the least.

Who cares who's in it and where it takes place, as long as they make an entertaining movie out of it, and it's too early to judge that aspect.

I find it mildly amusing that it will still be called "Akira" despite being otherwise Americanized but beyond that I can't say I care.
