R2-KT to appear in TFA

Pretty cool. Every time I read the story behind the droid I get a little choaked up.

R2-KT, a pink version of R2-D2, will appear in*Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

In November of 2004, Albin Johnson, the founder of the 501st Legion (a*Star Wars*fan club that does charity work in-costume), was informed by doctors that his daughter Katie had an inoperable brain tumor. While being treated the family frequently attended church and on one*occasion Albin took it as a sign that one of the church's windows was shaped like an R2 unit. That is when the idea formed to have an R2 droid built to watch over Katie while she slept, like R2-D2 did with Padme in*Attack of the Clones.*Katie's older sister suggested painting it pink and naming it after Katie. And that was the birth of R2-KT.

In April of 2005, Albin reached out to the*R2 Builders Group*and told them about his goal of having a droid built for his dying daughter. The*Star Warsfan club, led by Jerry Greene, leaped into action and began pulling all their resources to make Albin's dream a reality. Since the process takes time and Katie's condition was worsening, "one of the members of the group named*Andy Schwartz generously shipped his R2*unit down to Katie's home, complete with a pink makeover." Katie greeted her new friend with a*bright smile and with a bear hug.

In August of 2005, Katie succumbed to the cancer and passed away in her sleep. Nearly a year later, R2-KT was completed. Since then, Albin has kept his daughter's memory alive by using the pretty pink droid as a beacon of hope. He has brought R2-KT to countless charity events, to visit children in hospitals and to*Star Wars*events all across the country.

Katie and Albin's story had such a profound impact on the*Star Wars community that in 2007 Hasbro created an R2-KT action figure that they debuted at Comic-Con and the droid even made a cameo in the*Star Wars: The Clone Wars*film.

Now Albin has announced that R2-KT will make its live-action debut in*Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "Mary Franklin of Lucasfilm asked me to pitch the idea to Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm President), and after hearing the story of our pink ambassador of hope Lucasfilm requested we ship her off to London early last year,” Johnson wrote (via*mygeeksnews). Quick repairs were made and off she went for six months."

Awesome! I've known all about R2-KT for years, and the story hits me especially hard since my own daughter is named Katie.

There was a limited run action figure sold with proceeds going to Make-A-Wish, would be nice to have a larger run.

I've known about R2-KT for a while now, and I thought it was nice when they included her in The Clone Wars, hearing about her being in TFA is even nicer.

I've never heard of R2-KT before, but this is a touching story and I'm glad Katie is getting a form of immortality through KT and TFA.

This is something that I've been looking forward to with the film since I first heard about it. I'm not going to see it until Friday, so does anyone know what scene she's in?

Wow, I hadn't heard this touching story before. I didn't see the droid during the film but I wasn't looking for it. I'll keep an eye out the next time I see it.

Yeah, I didn't notice her at all. But I didn't specifically look for her either.

Tried looking and did not see. I can think of a scene where it might be and will look again next viewing.

I didn't notice the droid anywhere, but I wasn't specifically looking for it. It could have been in the background somewhere, such as in scenes where astromech droids are getting into fighter ships.

I didn't see her either. And while there were many droids, I did notice that the appearance of any astromechs was rather lacking. :(

I think I saw it very briefly - when they return from Mas's planet and BB-8 reunites with Poe as he examines his ship - there's a R2 unit going by in the background that could be R2-KT.

That or she's in one of the X-wings. I didn't really see what droid Poe has for the first battle since BB-8 isn't with him yet.

Saw it again today. It's in the scene I describe above and also
all the way on the right of reverse of the group shot when the Falcon leaves to find Luke and the Resistance base personnel are all together cheering.
