I live in constant fear that one day I will turn on my 360 only to find it has shuffled off its synthetic coil. Good thing I have a PS3 to keep me sane should the worst happen.

Well, they don't cost as much as a PS3 so they aren't that painful to replace.

But oh man. Why can't companies make anything that DOESN'T break? Is that asking too much? Clearly, it is.

Just phone MS and tell them you got 3 RROD, they will repair it for free, and they dont test them, they just replace the mobo abd DVD as standard now.

I have done this twice already with 360 that failed with the E74 error and both got fixed for free.

You got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I swear I have the only working 360 in the world, my m8 is on his 3rd which he had to DIY to make it work and well lets just say I will have to take a pic of it and show you lot. His 360 has no casing and weights on the graphics card to make it work...saying that it works rather good

My 360 turns 3 years old this December.

Indeed it is. I'm on my 4th one now.

But as Haggis and Tatties said, you should call up the Tech Support 1-800-469-9269 and see if it's still eligible to be fixed. RROD was pretty universally fixable.

If it's not under warranty and you know how to use a drill and a screwdriver, you can do the x-clamp fix. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcyYG-boWvM That's how I saved my out of warranty 360. It's been about three months since I did the fix and it's still working perfectly. All I needed to buy was some bolts, some washers, some thermal paste, and some sand paper. Cost like 15 bucks all together if you already have a drill, hammer, and a screwdriver.

It basically involves removing the mother board and sanding down two of the motherboard standoffs that are making the board flex, then drilling your own screw holes in to the bottom of the motherboard tray, applying a new layer of thermal paste, then putting everything back together only this time the heatsink is fastened to the body of the 360 instead of the motherboard. Depending on what specific method you use you might have to end up buying x-clamps or just hammering the original ones flat.

my 360 broke RROD. Rang up Microsoft at 7:50pm got to speaking to someone at 7:59pm and finished at 8:06pm.

now have to wait for the bleeders to pick it up and give it me back in 20 days time after Oh well looks like my bro's 360 is going to meet my HDD

I got my 360 in the fall of 2006, and it has since gone on to conquer the likes of games such as Fallout 3, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mass Effect. I consider myself lucky, it's the Battlestar Galactica of Xbox's.

if you do get a RROD 360 and can't get it repaired, would it be easy to transfer your xbox live account to a new system?

You can transfer your account through their web site once per year. In fact, that's usually what you have to do after they repair it anyway since you're not getting back what you sent out.

You don't have to go through the hassle of calling them. You can just use the website. And they don't necessarily repair it. For me, they just replaced the whole machine.

And just so you know, you can get you Xbox repaired/replaced for free up to 3 years after purchase (as opposed to the regular 1 year warranty) if it's the 3-light RROD.

the DRM tool is ONCE a year deal, if you wipe the current HD and then get a new machine, you just recover your gamertag and then re-download any content (games or DLC will work when online not offline)

Yeah unfortunately, it's just part of the Xbox experience. Maybe it's a game Microsoft invented, guess when your console goes RROD/E74.
