This inspired me to look up the meaning of the odd lyrics to L&S' theme song. To wit:

I didn't grow up on Laverne and Shirley other than seeing a few episodes on Nick at Nite, but I've always loved her work as a director, particularly Awakenings, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Big, and of course, A League of Their Own.

I loved her in Laverne and Shirley and I also loved the movies she directed.
I watched the series from the get-go. One of so many fun shows from the 70's and also one of many successful spin-offs.

She was a good comedic actress but also a very talented director.
She had been in very poor health for a long time, so the news is no surprise. I remember seeing an interview where she was asked what advice she would give to young people, and she said something like "Be yourself and don't smoke." Apparently, she had battled lung cancer, along with other health problems, for years.

I just saw an old episode of Bosom Buddies a couple of days ago that she guest starred in.{possibly where she first met Tom Hanks)

During Laverne and Shirley 's original run, the idea of unmarried young women living on their own was unthinkable in Thailand. So when the show aired in that country, Thai audiences were told that it was about two women who had escaped from a lunatic asylum.
I'm going to need to find the episode where Laverne and Shirley we introduced on Happy Days. I remember that they were both a lot different from when they were on their own show.

Sad. She was really great. I'm going to watch Big and A League of Their Own tonight. Which I have done many, many times.

Well, this is sad news. Penny Marshall had a very natural talent-- she made being hilarious look easy.

Yes, I remember the same. On Happy Days they were a lot more... what would probably be described as "trashy."
I really enjoyed her work, a great talent.
They actually tried to carry those personalities into the spinoff. I don't think they made it halfway through the first season. The show ended up more like the female Odd Couple, which makes sense, since her brother exec produced both series.

It was only 10 years ago that I met her and most of the cast of a Happy Days when they unveiled the Fonz statue in Milwaukee. My father and I went to the ceremony. Than afterwards nearby they all sat at a table on stage of an outdoor theater. For only $40 everyone of them signed a poster done just for that event. I believe there were only a few hundred copies.
I got to briefly talk to each as they signed. My Dad took photos beneath the stage. We were not allowed take pictures right on stage and the line had to keep moving. I just was beaming and said how I loved them all. It never occurred to me to say to Penny that she directed two of my favorite movies Big and Awakenings.
Afterwards there was a car parade of them off to Miller Park. I gave Henry Winkler double thumbs up, got a huge smile! Traffic stalled and Gary Marshall’s car was right in front of me. They were on the way to the Brewers game. Henry threw of the ball that day and they all were in Brewers uniforms on field. I told Gary were going to game. He started asking about some new player the Brewers had. I was impressed he is not from Milwaukee his co producer was, which is why the show took place there. But he knew baseball. But I was embarrassed even though I live in Wisconsin I barely follow a baseball. I was going for them! It did not help that traffic noise was so loud I could barely hear him.
That was a great day. Ron Howard was in Europe filming the di Vinci Code, but shot a special video in tribute to Henry shown on the scoreboard before the game.
It’s sad though. Tom Bosley, and Erin Moran are gone. Gary Marshall and now his sister Penny is gone. My father died four years ago too..
In a move since then I seemed to have lost the few pictures I took. Though all where from a distance and none with them and me together. I got newspaper articles and the Fonz card they gave out at the game. Most of all that wonderful poster, I should share a picture of, and the wonderful memories. Never pass up these type of opportunities. They may never come again...
