It is being reported that British actress Jean Simmons has passed away at the age of 80.

Simmons was a two-time Oscar nominee, for her role as Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's production of Hamlet and The Happy Ending. She is probably best-known, however, for her roles in such films as Guys and Dolls, Elmer Gantry, and Spartacus, amongst others.

Trek fans will probably remember her for her guest appearance in the TNG episode "The Drumhead", in which she portrayed former Admiral Satie.

I always liked her... great actress, very lovely, and she had quite an interesting, distinguished voice. She shall be missed.

^ I was afraid some people might make that mistake when they saw this thread. I guess such confusion is inevitable when two people have phonetically identical names.

Well since this thread so far is trending toward the wrong person, I'll say RIP Jean Simmons to get this back on track.

^ Thanks. Some respect for the person who actually died...

RIP to a fantastic distinguished actress. I agree with the initial poster - her sharp voice is what I'll remember most.

That's it, I'm making an addition to the thread title, just to clarify things. I don't think I can do that for the OP, however, so if one of the mods would like to change it to match, that would be much appreciated.

I'm far sadder about this than I would have been about Gene Simmons. Jean Simmons was a beautiful, talented and classy actress with some extraordinarily significant work to her credit. RIP, lovely lady. :(

I'm a fan of Guys and Dolls, so I knew the difference. Also, Jean is a woman's name. First clue. ;) Yes, she was a classy actress. Ever more swiftly, the golden age of Hollywood slips away from us.

I think I'm gonna dig out the VCR and the cassette of Spartacus this weekend.

    Sad news to hear.

She was so great on TNG. I remember reading (I think it was the TNG Companion or maybe it was on the season 4 dvd extras) that she and her friends were big fans of Star Trek and they would get together to discuss the latest episodes.

    Rest In Peace. :(

RIP to a great actress who improved such films like 'Spartacus' and 'Elmer Gantry' with her presence. And she made a great Admiral Satie too.

Funny I'd recognize Jean Simmons before Gene, probably. She'll always be the surprisingly proper slave girl in Spartacus to me; in which stead she was pretty good (and in "The Drumhead", fantastic, of course). R.I.P.

This is very sad news. I adored her in Elmer Gantry and especially Guys and Dolls.

    Rest in peace, Jean. :(

The Guardian has a nice obituary for her -- good overview of her life and career.

A fantastic actress; it's strange and kinda sad that she didn't have the more high-profile career that any number of less capable people did.

    RIP. :(
