R.I.P. Harve Presnell

Daneel

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
The celebrity deaths continue: AP is reporting that actor Harve Presnell has passed away at the age of 75 from pancreatic cancer.

Presnell was a prominent figure on Broadway for many years, starring in such plays as The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Annie (in fact, he spent a fair amount of time playing Daddy Warbucks onstage).

He also appeared in a number of films, including the screen version of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Glory Guys, When the Boys Meet the Girls, and the curious Western/Musical Paint Your Wagon (which also starred Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood -- many critics noted that Presnell was one of the few in the movie who could actually sing).

He spent very little time in front of the cameras during the 70s and 80s, but eventually returned to the big and small screens. He appeared in such movies as Fargo, Face/Off, The Family Man, and Flags of our Fathers. He might be better known to modern audiences for his recurring roles on several TV shows, including Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (as Dr. Sam Lane), Dawson's Creek (as Arthur Brooks), and The Pretender (as Mr. Parker). Trek fans may also recognize him as Colonel Q in the Voyager episode "The Q and the Grey".

Presnell is survived by his wife Veeva Suzanne Hamblen and three children from a previous marriage.

Great character actor. I loved his fatherly roles, especially in "Fargo", where his Ted Turner-esque accent was a hoot. "This is my show!" "I don't want ya muckin' this up!" "No Jeannie, no money!". His confrontation with Steve Buscemi's character was classic.

He was a great actor and singer. My late mother's favorite version of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana was the one he did.

I think his version of "They Call the Wind Maria" in the film version of Paint Your Wagon is the best ever recorded. It's a great sequence in the film and his voice was amazing.

Well,
there was some room for ambiguity, but it seemed pretty likely to me that Mr. Parker was dead by the end of the last TV-movie.

Man, I feel kind of weird putting a spoiler tag on a TV-movie that aired about 8 years ago, but I suppose it's possible some fans haven't seen the movie yet... I only saw it myself for the first time last year, when it came out on DVD.

RIP. I actually never saw the Pretender telefilms, only the series itself.

I have seen that horrible HORRIBLE movie, and I just can't remember it.

Yeah, it was kind of bad, so it's probably better that you can't remember it. ;)

There was still much left unresolved too, so it's a shame we'll probably never get a third movie to finally tie up all the loose ends. On the plus side, though, at least Isle of the Haunted didn't end on a cliffhanger like the series itself did.

That is damned irritating... Loved most of his work from Voyager, Mr. Deeds (as Uncle Preston), Patch Adams and Lois & Clark as Sam Lane, Lois's father.
R.I.P. Mr Presnell :(

I just saw Saving Private Ryan again this weekend, and he has a small part but adds a lot.

RIP
