QUOTES of the not-so-famous kind.

^ Speaking of reputed Churchill exchanges...

Churchill went into the House Of Commons toilets, to find the leader of the opposition using the communal urinal. Churchill stood at the far end, well away from him. The exchange went:

"Feeling a little stand-offish today, Winston?"
"Of course. Every time you see something big you want to nationalize it..."

"I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me."
----- Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello, in 'The Departed.'

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a better place... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
----- Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
----- Gautama Buddha

After 15 years in the restaurant industry I ended broke, burnt out and suffering from a number of (minor) physical ailments brought on by the rigors of the job. I did, however, get a few words to live by along the way that (almost) make it all worthwhile.

"Don't let it happen-make it happen."

"If you don't have time to do it right, how can you possibly have time to do it over?"

"I don't want to hear, 'That's not my job.' We are all part of a team and can only succeed together."

"Since using my Fernandes Sustainer, I have become the life and soul of any and every party. Guys look at me anxiously from corners of the room, while fawning bimbettes seek my opinions on the fetishisings of music's inherent and delineated meanings"

Robert Fripp

You should never put the new antlers of a deer to your nose and smell them. They have little insects that crawl into the nose and devour the brain.
Isn't that like telling kids NOT to put beans in their ears?

Some of comedian Rita Rudner's one-liners:

“Before I met my husband, I'd never fallen in love. I'd stepped in it a few times.”

“I want to have children while my parents are still young enough to take care of them.”

“I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.”

“Whenever I date a guy, I think, 'Is this the man I want my children to spend their weekends with?'”

“In Hollywood, a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk.”

“I don't plan to grow old gracefully; I plan to have face-lifts until my ears meet.”

And this reputed exchange between Lady Astor and Winston Churchill:

Lady Astor: “Mr. Churchill, you are very drunk.” Churchill: “Madam, you are very ugly. But tomorrow morning, I will be sober.”

That Churchill quote is fantastic, but supposedly he was actually talking to Bessie Braddock, at least according to Wikipedia. Look towards the bottom of the article.

The article on Bessie Braddock says otherwise, so who knows who really said it. Maybe the whole thing never happened. I do notice that her statue is pretty ugly though.

"Should we admire the man who succeeds because of his talents, or the man who succeeds in spite of them?"

- me, I think.

Bush Sr. also flipped off a bunch of Australians during that same trip. He was holding up the V sign, like for victory, but with his thumb between the two fingers.

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave/When we think our children naive" -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Words I live by at work and at home!

^ Actually, no. (The only time I have ever heard Eddie Izzard do anything at all was when he was on Whose Line Is It Anyway and that wasn't one. ;) )

"I desire the Polish people carnally." - Jimmy Carter
(what he actually wanted to say was "I have a strong desire to know the Polish people" but the translator fucked up)
