Quicktime 7.3.1 problem

I recently upgraded to the next version of Quicktime 7, version 7.3.1 which apparently incorporates the new H.264 compression codec which allows for much smaller QT files and new surround sound support.

But now when I try to play a Quicktime file, all I get is a flickering green/red/grey/purple image, as if the player isn't decoding the file properly. I get sound, but the video is fucked up.

Looks like this:

Does it need updated video drivers? As I'm still running my original video drivers from 4+ years ago.

I'm going to try to do a reinstall and see if that fixes anything.

Is there a reason you are still using the original drivers? If not it is probably a good idea to upgrade anyway.

Well, to be honest, I have always been squeemish about updating video drivers.

Exactly how does one go about doing it?

Go to the website of your video card manufacturer (Nvidia, ATI, Intel, etc.). It should have a link to the driver downloads on the main page.

Yeah, I already did that. Got the latest drive which was just released 2 weeks ago.

The problem is that my card is so old it's practically the last on the list of supported cards.

I also need a new computer. My 4.33 year old P4 3.0GHz 512 MB RAM, w/128MB GeForce FX 5200 just ain't cuttin' it anymore.

^That doesn't mean it'll work. I just gave up using QT, and so far I haven't missed much.

Well, what'ws funny is that the embedded player within my web browser works for playing movie trailers and whatnot, but the stand-alone player does what it does as shown above.

Well it is not likely to be the cause of the problem - your PC should be well able to run Quick Time.

The other thing to check is the hardware acceleration settings - I used to have an FX5200 and it always caused trouble with QT.

You can try going to the QuickTime control panel > advanced and switch it to "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" or leave on Direct 3D and turn off the acceleration options.

That might make a difference.

Yep, that did the trick. Turned off the Direct3D video acceleration option and it works now. Upgrade must've either reset those options or added them and my card just freaked out about it.

Ditto. Finally watched the WALL-E trailers.

When I recently noticed there was a QuickTime update, I launched QT and clicked on check for updates, and got a buffer overrun and crash.

So I uninstalled QT and downloaded and installed the current version. It seems to work. But just out of curiosity, I tried the check for update again, and again got a buffer overrun and crash.

???

I believe in older versions they used to be turned off by default, glad I could help!

Ironically my problem was with an FX5200 as well.

I am always having problems qith QuickTime and ITunes for Windows - they are both rather buggy pieces of software and were it not for my new Ipod I probably would try and find an alternative to itunes.

Incidentally for anyone trying to play or transcode video VLC media player rules on a truly awesome level. Well worth a look for anyone who wants a one size fits all media player, though it does not allow library creation etc.

<shrug> I have iTunes (no ipod) and it works fine. Nothing went wrong when I did a check for update with it.

I have found it to be a rather slow piece of software, a memory hog, does not make good use of dual core processors and I haven't found a way of playing video full-screen on one monitor without blanking out my other one.

It is not a BAD piece of software, functionally it is actually pretty good, better than WMP. The problem is that Apple does not work hard enough on its ports for Windows.

That's exactly how I would sum it up, too. I used to despise QuickTime, but I have to admit, the video quality is usually first rate.

As for the video issues, when I owned my FX5200, it did the same thing. Those were tough little video cards, though. Mine ran great for the longest time without a hitch.

Geez, they must've really pushed those FX5200 cards. That was sort of the default Nvidia card for DELL computers there for a while.

In any case, I'm gonna be looking to buy a new PC by Summer time I believe. This time, I ain't gettin' no slouch of a card and making damn sure to get enough RAM...probably 4 Gig. Also a quad core processor.

You can still buy FX5200 cards. They're perfect for businesses, or people who want something more than integrated. Plus, I played Battlefront 2 with them at max graphic settings, and the card handled it superbly.

Yeah, I played ROME Total War with it for the longest time, but it got to a point with adding in all the mods which upped the number of textures and detail within them, and it started to bog down. And since then, I really have played any big games.

I've got a copy of Medieval II that I didn't even install, because I know my PC won't handle it.
