Quick Question About Car Painting

I brought my car to the body shop to get it painted and have had to bring it back twice to get them to fix items they missed (or messed up). You can't tell what it looks like at the shop because it is never washed when I pick it up because "the paint hasn't been drying for 24 hrs yet."

Anywho, I paid $125 extra for an extra top clear coat to be put on my car. I called the shop today and guy at the shop said they had to repaint the whole entire car for me to fix some of their mistakes. The car was supposed to be done today and when I called they said the paint is still drying. That means the car will not be washed when I pick it up. But my question is this... does the car have to be completely dry before they put the extra clear coat on it???? If my car is still drying... enough so that it can't be washed... does that mean they never gave me the extra clear coat I paid $125 for???

I think they've been seriously dicking you around. Big time.

With no knowledge at all on how painting a car works, I suspect the answer to your question is "no" and I would counter with, "Where did you get this car painted? "Shady Painters 'R' Us"?

But, I'd await more knowledgeable opinions.

does it have to be dry... no. But you also don't need anesthesia when you go to the dentist

as for the clear coat, it's unlikely that they put it on

I have got to see my eye doctor. At first I thought the thread title was "Quick Question About Cat Painting." I was going to tell you that's a very bad idea.

I bought my mom a couple of books titled "Why Paint Cats?" and "Why Cats Paint" for Christmas one year.

I've tried to do better since.

Yes, the paint film must be completely dry before application of the clear coat. If not, the solvents in the clearcoat will eat into the uncured paint film and cause it to bubble, deform or even delaminate, resulting in a shit finish.
However it shouldn't take a day to dry, most spray painters use some form of low temp oven to park the car in and to heat the car to a nice 60 to 80 deg C to cure the paint fully within 2 hours (well here in Oz anyway!)

Totally off topic, but that made me laugh for the first time today. Which is awesome, because I've been having a lousy day. Thanks!
