So quick poll because I bit the bullet today and deleted Facebook.
How many people here keep a facebook page, how many have deleted their page and how many just don't want one or any interest in having one?

Poll closes in 7 days.

For now, I'm holding onto mine. Trying to better manage my presence there for various reasons.

Technically I have one, but it hasn't shown any activity by me since around 2009.
At the time it was just to keep in touch with people from an old forum I used to frequent but that eventually went down,

I had issues with mine constantly getting locked and eventually deleted it. Just one less thing to deal with.

It helps me publicize my doings. I have almost all friends snoozed or unfollowed. Even ppl I agree with, I get tired of ppl telling me what to think.

The groups are now more fun, especially atomic living about midcentury modern life. Had to quit some baseball and jazz ones b/c constant arguing.

No Facebook, instagram, eh... the other stuff, I never had a page on any of that and it will remain that way.

I've always kept a limited list of friends, most of whom I've had in-person contact with, keeping everything private and that solves most issues.

I miss the days of Myspace that seemed better in a lot of ways.
Jazz groups sound fun but how do you get arguing in a jazz group? What do they argue over?

I do the exact same thing on FB, always have. The only times I’ve run into issues were times when I ventured into Trek groups there. Won’t make that mistake again, learned my lesson. ;)

Yeah, I kind of limit where I post too. I try to limit how much I post in public groups or public postings, as that's just an avenue of info for scammers. I've very rarely had any issues this way. I also have my account locked down pretty well in terms of the privacy options.

Why? How bad were they?
I was in a few Dr Who groups on FB and things were fine till Jodie appeared then they became dumpster fires

The fact that a lot of Trek groups now have to state "we welcome fans of ALL Trek series" in their rules should say a lot. And that there are "REAL Trek" groups that are NOT welcoming to fans of all Trek series. It's a battlefield, plain and simple. And even in the open-minded groups you still get people who stir up trouble regarding Disco, PIC, etc. I lost all hope when I received homophobic comments in a Trek fans group that was supposedly "lgbt+ friendly". The only way I've seen admins and mods somewhat keeping the whole thing at bay is to put new posts on "must reviewed by an admin first", but this slows things down considerably. And it still doesn't stop awful comments from appearing.

Oh gods sounds a hell of a lot like what happened in the Dr. Who groups. The moment Jodie appeared as the Doctor a lot of the ones I was in became dumpster fires in the group comments, and only then did the admins make an actual appearance, because prior to that things seemed nice.

Yeah I witness this sort of behavior in a lot of fandoms where new things are introduced and different approaches are taken. And since a lot of groups on FB have a LOT of members and are either not moderated at all or only sporadically checked by one or two admins/mods, it comes as no surprise that FB is one of the worst places to go to when it comes to groups.

I liked Facebook for some of the fan groups like Alan Partridge and David Brent and for keeping up to date with family and friends far and wide but it could be irritating with all the ads and sponsored content that had nothing to do with my interests and the annoying trends that social media breeds. It also majorly pissed me off when a friend would unfriend me for no reason. I know I shouldn't be oversensitive but when it was an old school friend I would take it personally and they probably did it to trim their online profile for career reasons. Rock and roll.

Since I stopped using all social media I feel more productive and at ease. All the important people in my life are still at the end of a phone.

I lost a friend because I wasn’t a smart phone first adopter: “I guess we’re two different people”

“What’s wrong with th—“

This was 2008.

It still hurts.
