question

Excuse me? Is this a Star Trek question? "Barnacle Bill" is the name of a sailor from an old drinking song (beware: explicit and extremely misogynistic lyrics). A cleaned-up version of the song was the basis for a Popeye cartoon.

There is a science fiction novella called Barnacle Bill the Spacer by Lucius Shepard, but it has nothing to do with Star Trek.

Tell me about it. I just skimmed them, and I can't help but wonder exactly what kind of screwed up person would actually come up with something like that.

It's a drinking song apparently, plus it's from what, 80 or so years away, now I'm not condoning the words in that song, but please don't place today's morals on a drinking song from the 1920s.

I guess you've got a point there. It was a very different time after all.

Barnical Bill's was a seafood restaurant chain while I was still living in San Antonio. They all decided to fold back in 05 or 06, but the partner chain that was always close by is a franchise known as Bill Miller's Barbeque Restaurant. They're really not that good compared to a Rudy's or Grady's Barbeque, but still had some ok food. (hey texans like their bbq) Barnical bill's had great Oysters.

off the subject, I just finished The Soul Key and have Neverending Sacrifice on order. But right now it's time to get back into SCE, i'm up to the last of the dominion war log entries, and now it's time to read Wildfire. I've heard good things, so i'm expecting alot of classic Mack.

In a truely free world there is no political correctness.

Um, what? "Political correctness" is nothing more than a culturally-defined set of parameters for expressing respect and dignity for others. I'd love to hear an explanation of how this somehow impinges upon your notion of "freedom."

I believe that political correctness is increasingly a basic concept that says your believes are more valid than those of anyone that disagrees with you, and if someone dares to harbor opposing viewpoints they souldn't voice them. My orginal statement was a reaction to Christophers' use of of misogynistic to describe the song, and later JD referance to the auther as screwed up, personal I like brazen songs. And wasn't barnicle bill also a character of Heinlein ?

^ I disagree with that completely, but I still hate political correctness. I think being straightforward is a goal to which we should all aspire, not intentional obfuscation just to make people feel less bad when confronting the truth.
