Question: Why is this forum so darn good?!?!

Eh, used to better a few years back.

Get used to this response Supreme Admiral. The BBS has been around for a long time, and any time anyone says how they like something here there'll be someone else to point out how great it was several years ago.

I like it now too - no cliques, lots of humour and some good serious discussions.

No cliques? Are you kidding me? :wtf:

How the hell do you have a clique on a forum?

By ignoring people. You have your little group and you only respond to the people in that little group.

RPG.net, great example of how that works.

I always forget the little paper umbrella....

*pause for pathos and moody photograph*

This is why you fail... :(

Oh, it happens.

Actually no. Obviously everyone's experience is different but there doesn't seem to me to be any exclusive groups setting up threads for their own little jokes and parties like there used to be.

Of course there are still groups of friends - there always will be especially on boards this large, but it's the exclusion that makes the difference.

And other than the aforementioned annoyance of there always being someone to tell you how great things were ten years ago - everything in Misc is open to anyone who wants to join in.

(This is difficult to explain, because obviously every thread is technically open to anyone joining in - but in some situations there's a starting point that's only known to those in the know and that excludes everyone else. The Canon Violation avatars looked in danger of that at the beginning but thankfully it seems to have moved on.)

Posters make the forum. For every one poster I want to hunt down and execute, there are 10-15 cool posters here.

Oh God. I hope I'm of the latter group.

I don't know you well enough yet. :p

The type of posters I tend to hate are the EXTREME bashers or gushers, or are just super stupid in general.

Those whose sole purpose on here is seemingly to hate a TV show or movie -- where they declare their hate for it in advance, yet watch it anyway (with the sole intent of hating every minute of it), then come back here to tell everyone how right they are because they fulfilled their own prophecy -- they're the worst, IMO.

One poster on here watched every episode of Enterprise with pen and paper in hand to tell us how bad it was and how much of a waste of time it was.

There are a couple other posters who were sort of that way with Battlestar Galactica. One hated it so much he bashed it in a general TV thread where the OP was asking for opinions about shows he should watch. The BSG basher went so far as to spoil the entire series for him.

So as long as you're not like that, or you're not so in lust with your video game console that you tout how superior it is to the rival console by citing that such-and-such game got a 9.5 rating for your console but a measly 9.4 for the other console, you're fine by me. :)

I'm just here for the fun. Every once in a while I get educated (Americans-WTF in TNZ) or am able to educate (Dating thread) or feel compassion (when Plecostomus recently took ill) or laugh like hell (when Pleco's wife described his treatment and recovery...priceless!:)), but by and large I'm in it for the fun. As long as you don't let the inevitable trolls get you down, you'll have fun. And even then, don't mistake a little good-natured fun poked your way as trolling. Sometimes the fun-poking is the MOST fun!

I mentioned in another thread about a message board I had been to (but refuse to post on) where new members get ripped a new one all the time by the veterans and the mods look the other way. But on the other hand, if a mod gets a stick up his/her ass regarding a poster over anything, no matter how insignificant, they'll suspend or ban you with no rhyme or reason.

I don't really see a problem with that.

I've been an active member in another forum for three years and we always (mods included) rip on new people but we don't do it to be generally mean, we do it as a "test" to see if they can handle it. It's not a really negative forum in general but flaming does happen and even the most popular members should expect flaming once in a while. We sort of do the test to "prepare" them and see if they are worthy of the forum or if they're just going to be crybabies. We like good, strong posters, not people who are going to make threads whining about every negative thing that is said to them. You establish yourself and get respect when you show that you can handle the heat.

That forum has rep and we've had people go from a long bar of red rep to a full bar of green rep. It's how you handle things and how good a poster you are.

I'll just bend over and it'll all be good again.

To clarify, rep is stupid and means nothing, I am just using it as an example of how one goes from disliked to liked in that scenerio.
