Question on encounter strategy

Hi---I have a question on...well, what it says. There's a really great video on youtube that shows an encounter between the TNG era and the classic BSGalactica. In the video, the Cylons destroy the Galactica first before going after the civilian ships (just prior to Enterprise-D getting there). What would be the strategy behind going after the Galactica first, rather than the civilian ships? If they were seeking to destroy the humans, wouldn't they pick off the easy targets first? Individual Cylons have shown themselves to be open to suicide in order to cause some damage, so it doesn't seem like the thought was "let's take out the Galactica first, to cut down on the damage we take". The Galactica has to divide its fire, anyway, as the video shows three Cylon capital ships versus the Galactica. There's not really any question as far as who's got more firepower in the encounter.

The video itself only shows ships, and I'm writing the story of what happens with the people, and I'm at a point where I need to clarify this particular point.

thanks for the brainz!

Maybe if the Galactica were taken out first, there would be little or no resistance possible from the unarmed civilian vessels after that, and it would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
