Question for those who have widescreen tv's/monitors

Just curious.... when you watch standard def content, do you watch it in 4:3 with "side bars" or do you stretch/zoom to fill the screen.

Me? 4:3.

I try to watch it the way the creator intended me to watch it.

I like to crop it a bit for cable signals, but digital stuff is 4:3. Actually, most of the stuff I watch digitally is 16:9, so not much gets stretched out anyways.

4:3 with bars. And I HATE HD cable channels like TNTHD who 'stretch' stuff that was originally filmed in 4:3 for you; or claim the an upconverted 4:3 SD source is still 'HD'.

I us the "smart" mode on my Sony TV, but that's mostly because it's just a 32" wide. If it was bigger I'd probably go with the 4:3 mode.

I'll buck the trend and say that I usually watch 4:3 content zoomed in to 14:9 which doesn't distort the image noticeably.

If it's old sprite-based games I can't say I'm bothered and leave the screen set to "widescreen," but Ghost Squad on my Wii I'll change to 4:3.

I set it to automatic and let it get on with it. Never had letterbox or pillarbox in sight, which is how I like it.

I used an HDMI cable to hook up my LCD TV to my cable box. The cablebox has an HDMI Upconversion setting, so the picture automatically adjusts to fill the screen and give you optimum resolution. It's hardly distorted or cropped. I highly recommend it!
