Question For Dog Owners With Pickups

We just got a new dog today from the pound. She's a 47 lb Beagle/Akita mix (mostly beagle). We are wanting to take her with us when we go places, and when we go inside somewhere (for example, to the local zoo this evening) we want to let her be out in the bed of our pickup truck. We bought a "truck tie down" assembly from the pet store today, but it didn't reach far enough across the width of the bed. We have a Nissan Titan. She was able to step her front paws up on the sides of the bed and could have jumped out. When we came back from our jaunt through the zoo, someone had removed her tie down from the interior of the bed and relocated it to the base of the outside of the truck and the dog was on the ground. We want to avoid this. Any suggestions? We have found a lot of nylon style tethers and harnesses, but this ones a chewer, and could make short work of something like that.

Honestly I would not leave a dog in the bed of a pick up. The bed of the truck can get very very very hot (Im talking bout burning their paw pads) but based on your location I dont think that's a concern. Then there are the dick heads out there that wont hesitate to screw with your dog. Then there is a liability issue. If your dog is agressive he or she may be able to attack a passer by. Finally there is the chance that your dog may jump out of the bed at the worst possible time (i.e. going 60 mph down the street). So my advice is dont do it. Let em ride in the cab if you have room. If not dont take em with ya and dont leave em unattended in the bed. I have a 110 lb Lab / Great Dane mix and a 3/4 ton crew cab pick up.
