Question about the TOS-R DVD box sets

I have a question about the TOS remastered DVD sets.

Are these sets dual-sided sets that contain the unaltered versions of the episodes as well as the same special features that are on the regular DVD box sets?

I believe that it is the case but I looked at the info for the sets at Amazon and it didn't seem to say either way.

Thanks. :techman:

No. They're the remastered version only.

(The Season 1 set is dual-sided, but only so as to include both standard DVD and HD-DVD formats; both are of the remastered episode. After the first season set came out, HD-DVD kinda faded away, so the other two season sets are standard DVD format, and single-sided.)

Does anyone have any information on when the remaining two DVD boxsets of TOS-R are due to be released for region 2 (UK, specifically)? Since we got season 1 months ago, there's been nothing. No news, no release dates. Are they going to bother at all?

Region 2's delay is causing Region 4's delay.

Region 4 got Season One in November 2007!

Any idea what's causing the delay? Is there anyone I can contact to find out?

Ring Paramount Home Video.

I assume Season One didn't sell to expectations, or rather, many outlets didn't bother ordering any shelf stock at all - eg. in Australia, Myer and Virgin were pretending it was never released. The first wave of Region 4 stock seems to have been depleted from online sources here, so they were probably very cautious not to make too many.

Most retailers were hedging their bets re HD vs Blu-Ray, so maybe they'll wait it out a bit longer.

If Paramount Home Video stays true to form, not until the existing stock is about ready to sell out.

And until they drop the prices to something resembling reality, especially in light of the current economy, well, don't hold your breath.

Thanks for the info, Therin.

Why would any one want the remastered versions, Just curious. I want the real deal.
Because they're better.

That is subjective.

Initially, I had little to no interest in seeing the remastered episodes. I own the original series box sets and quite enjoy them. However, as I have re-watched the series in its entirety, I find myself more interested in the remastered sets as well.

I don't think I'd ever say the remastered episodes are "better," but by the same conceit I won't dismiss the possibility that they have improved the episodes either.

People have always complained there were only 80 episodes to see. Now we have 160. ;)

Some of the special stuff on the TOS-R set is about the remastering work, so obviously that's unique to that version. Most of the rest is comprised of new interviews that were done I think after the TOS box sets, but don't quote me on that.

My understanding is that a lot of the extras were originally done when the first box sets were done, but only available in foreign editions, which has always confused the hell out of me. Why the hell does Austrailia get more extras than we do?

Starting with TNG, it was a marketing initiative of Paramount Home Video UK to discourage people in Region 2 from pre-ordering from Amazon US (ie. Region 1) and thus not supporting the local product, for which Paramount Home Video UK had paid big money to distribute. They also pioneered plastic canisters for boxed ST sets, where US got cardboard for TNG, DS9 and VOY.

Region 4 (Australasia) uses already-approved UK masters and box art, several months after their UK release.

Best Buy in USA decided to buy the rights to the new bonus material so they could offer extras on their US sets. Due to ongoing complaints from the US public, Region 1 TOS, TAS and ENT got plastic canisters just like ours.

Now that the series is finally being released on Blu-ray, you will be able to choose which version (original or remastered) you would like to view via seamless branching.
