Question About the Errand of Fury Trilogy

I've always wondered why there were such long gaps between the releases of the books in the Errand of Fury trilogy. It seemed like a long time to wait between the volumes of a trilogy. Anyone have any idea why?

I apologize if I'm wrong here, but I *believe* there was a personal issue in the author's life that caused a delay at one point.

I could very well be wrong.

The first "Errand" trilogy was contracted to appear all-at-once, over two consecutive months of 2002, and I guess most people assumed that when a sequel trilogy was announced it would be the same deal. But these new instalments were seemingly to be spaced out further - annually? (2005, 2007, 2008) - but there was a also an unexpected delay for a family bereavement at one point.

Actually, the delay between books goes back to the time when Pocket was reducing the list a bit. Suddenly, they had more books than they could publish and limited spots for TOS titles so it took a while to work through the backlog. At the same point the theoretical 3rd ERRAND trilogy (that would have dealt with the fallout from ERRAND OF MERCY and sort of explain what happened to the Organians) was cancelled.

Too bad about the outright cancelation of the third trilogy:(. Hopefully you'll get another chance to deal with the fallout at some point in the not so distant future...
