Question about the Defiant and its weapons

Another reason why the Defiant was so strong is that it was built for battle and nothing else, my guess is they didn't put uber weps on the Galaxy and other classes for fear of the Romulans or someone else mis-understanding that as a call for war.

Also I agree with what many people have said, The defiant had speed so it made sense to have these fast firing weapons for close range, meanwhile Galaxy could stand still and hit anything with its phasers.

I wouldn't want to argue that the Defiant actually has better weapons and defenses than a Galaxy. It would be enough for the Defiant to have exceptionally good weapons and defenses for her size, and to apply them with vengeance where the captain of a larger and more powerful ship might instead show mercy.

Agreed strongly that the Defiant and the Galaxy are designed for different fighting doctrines. Both seem to hold their own in the sort of battles they are designed for, while faring badly when pitted against the wrong sort of enemy. A combined fleet of the types might be a good idea... (And indeed this is what Starfleet sent against the Romulans in "Message in a Bottle", combining the close-in punch of two Defiants with the standoff phasers and torpedoes of an Akira).
