Question about Star Trek Maps

I'd love to see an add-on for Celestia that puts in huge coloured blobs for the different territories. And adds labels for the different Trek systems.

I prefer the maps to Star Charts because the maps take the third dimention into account. Star Charts is a pretty book but pretty much useless for determining how far things are supposed to be from each other.

Well, a lot of its star systems are real, so there are places you can get their coordinates in order to calculate their distances, or programs you can use to calculate them for you.

Still, yeah, the lack of a third dimension can be misleading, so it's important to take it with a grain of salt when two systems appear to be close together.

I can get the coordinates from places like the ISDB but the original maps actually supplied the coordinates in the book. A lot of the information in Star Charts is available alsewhere as well. Doesn't mean that it shouldn't be included either.

The project came across as half done with a greater emphasis on the pretty pictures than on making the Trek galaxy seem like a real place. 2-D maps just don't cut it.

Well, my copy of Star Trek Maps came in today and I couldn't be more pleased. It was in great condition. The case was in pretty decent shape. It's obvious that its thirty years old and it's been opened a few times but there are no tears; just a few small corner scuffs and edgewear. The booklet is in great condition. No tears, folds or creases. It's just starting to yellow with age and take on that "old book" smell. The map sheets themselves are in excellent condition and have obviously been handled with extreme care. I'd dare say they are in near mint condition. I too have a pdf of these so I will probably not handle them too much so as to maintain the excellent condition. All-in-all, an excellent find for less than $17 shipped. Woo hoo!

My copy just arrived. I had a few minutes to look it over, during the last few minutes of my lunch break.

I'd say the primary value is in the Easter eggs (which by themselves were worth what I paid). Like references to places in the Humanx Commonwealth and Star Wars franchises.

Yeef! What kind of Enterprise model did they shoot for the cover? I built a better one from the (3rd edition, at least) AMT kit, during my freshman year of high school!
