Question about a universal remote.

My tv recently went out and we moved one from another room into my room so I can watch tv. We though lost the remote to it and it is kind of a older tv. It is a bigscreen tv and I think HD or LD. But without a remote I got to fiddle with the tv to turn the volume up or down and stuff like that. Would a universal remote work and is it easy to program it even if you don't know the exact model of the tv or what year it came from or the serial number, if tv's even have serial numbers? Not a tech guy so if you could explain it simply that would be great.

If your television is from an alternate reality, the remote may not work. Codes are only meant to program in this particular universe. You may want a multiversal remote.

If you're obsessively brand-loyal like I am, you may not even need a universal remote.

Most of my gear is Sony, and thus the TV remote controls everything - right out of the box.

The tv is a Sharp and a big screen. Maybe a 50 inch. Does that help?
You don't state the model but Sharp is a major brand so if it isn't more than a decade old I imagine most universal infra-red remotes can be configured to work with it. I assume it's not one of those weird-ass TVs that use sonic or wireless remotes. Most universal remotes also have the advantage of being able to control several devices (more than standard TV remotes usually do).

I've found that most universal remotes will work with most TV, unless the TV also has a built-in VHS or DVD player.

LOL. Having to get up and mess with controls on the TV. I remember having to turn the antenna for my dad. Those were the days.

"A little more. STOP! Go back. Too far. No! The other way. Almost. Yeah... Right there stop! Grab me a beer when you come back in."

^^ Yeah.. and when everything worked there would be a storm and you would have to go back up again.. because giving the TV a whack didn't work well enough... those were the days indeed.

The fun with the digital channels is that you make an adjustment, back away from the antenna, and wait for the signal to lock before checking the signal strength to know if you have to repeat the whole process.

If the TV is an old one a new remote might not work with it. You have to program in code and if it won't take the code it won't work.

FYI, If you have a smartphone with an IR Blaster, you don't even need to buy a universal remote. There are apps on your smartphone that can give you that functionality.
