Question about 4x16 "Prey"

So, in this episode, Paris and Chakotay are hunting a member of Species 8472 on Voyager with the help of a Hirogen. Their phase rifles had (somehow) been modified by Seven to shoot Borg nanoprobes. During the hunt, the Hirogen knocks out Chakotay and fires at Paris.

Why was Paris not assimilated? He had nanoprobes shot at him.

Exactly. The Doctor had been modifying Sevens nanoprobes for a wide variety of uses that you would have to wonder exactly how much of the crew was riddled with "benign" Borg Nanoprobes by the time they got to earth?

At the very least, you'd think that nanoprobes would be the perfect weapon against nanoprobes that Janeway's Crew could be inoculated from Assimilation if they were willing to take their medicine.
