Queen of CHIC flicks

Yeah, I know...most of us on this site are men/boys and we are not supposed to like Chic flicks..well...I DO!!! Some of this is because I am married and in order to see movies like TRANSFORMERS and STAR TREK, I have to go with her to see her movies...its just the way it is....

So..I do like chick flics. And several of our big movie stars come right out of that genre..Julia Roberts--Megan Ryan--Reese Witherspoon--Cameron Diaz--Drew (yuck) Barrymore--and others I haven't listed....

So...guys...cover your 'nuts' and tell us...who is your favorite chick flick star (so don't name any one-shots) and what is your favorite chic movie???

Rob

Julia Roberts-Pretty Woman. My secret pleasure and joy-I'll watch it over and over again.

Re: Queen of CHICK flicks

I'll confess to enjoying Sweet Home Alabama (starring Reese Witherspoon) and Serendipity (starring Kate Beckinsale). I watch those movies every year. And I recently bought a copy of Must Love Dogs (starring Diane Lane) when it was on sale. :o

I have a good number of chick flicks in my DVD collection. I'm a big Hugh Grant fan, because I identify with that bumbling, awkward nice-guy character he usually plays.

As for favorite romantic comedies, my top five in this order:

  1. Love Actually
  2. Sleepless in Seattle
  3. Notting Hill
  4. Music and Lyrics
  5. When Harry Met Sally...

4. Nine Months/Notting Hill
5. Sweet Home Alabama
6. My Ex-superhero Girlfriend

8. Mystic Pizza
9. Somewhere in Time

My 'life partner' has a girlfriend who goes to see all the chick flicks with her, so I get spared for the most part. But the last one we saw together that I really liked was Waitress, starring Keri Russell.

Love Actually is the best romantic comedy of all time. Sweet Home Alabama was quite good. Notting Hill wasn't too bad. When hary Met sally is a classic. Catch and Release is good. (admittedly without Kevin Smith it wouldn't have been nearly as good) and a few others. Don't really have a favorite chick flick actor.

I was actually on the island for several days when Reeve was shooting Somewhere In Time on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel.

That would have been cool...I always liked that movie. I actually saw it in the theaters with my then current girl squeeze. And the music is just so haunting...John Barry's best I think...

Hmm.

According to La Femme Reel, Casablanca qualifies as a chick flick.

But somehow, choosing Casablanca feels like cheating. So...

Hmm.

Going from that list, I would have to say my favourite is Mildred Pierce. A terrific women's picture/film noir, about the struggles of a divorced businesswoman and her tortured relationship with her daughter. Joan Crawford won an Oscar for her performance in the title role.

But that also feels like cheating. It's based on a James M. Cain novel, after all. So...

Hmm.

The only other films I really like from that list are Moulin Rouge, Sense and Sensibility, and Heathers.

Dammit!! I hate when I forget a movie..Moulin Rouge!!! And, oh boy get ready for this, XANADU...(shhhhhhh just keep it between us. I also liked MAMA MIA)

But my wife and I have one big battle!!! She thinks GREASE 2 is better than GREASE 1...this coming from a woman who thinks MOONRAKER is the best 007 movie. Need I say more??

^No need to feel guilty; Mamma Mia! was a lot of fun. I just wished they'd picked someone who could sing better than Pierce Brosnan. :p

Yeah...I agree. As for Rouge? I'll give OBWAN-KANOBI his due...that dude can sing. And so could Nicole...My favorite song from Rouge is the "ROXANNE" number..well staged...

I forgot the other one that hooks me-Sliding Doors with Gwen Paltrow. A charming and over-looked flic, IMO.

  • Notting Hill
  • Sleepless In Seattle
  • Mamma Mia!

What Dreams May Come is SUCH a depressing film..but it is very good...

I don't have a favorite star of the genre, but if I had to pick a film, it would be Jerry Maguire.

I do really like most Sandra Bullock movies. While You Were Sleeping is my absolute favorite romantic comedy. I also like Two Weeks Notice, Miss Congeniality, Forces of Nature, and 28 Days. My wife had me watch Love, Actually and I really really enjoyed that one. Other favorite romantic comedies include Notting Hill, 13 Going On 30, and My Best Friend's Wedding.
