Queen Elizabeth II HAS DIED.

Can an incoming regent pick any name, or only among the 3 or 4 names they already have.

Charles Philip Arthur George. How cool would "King Arthur" have been? Would he have to use Arthur II?

They can choose any name they want.

It doesn't even have to be any of their given names. They can use one of those names, or pick up where any previous name left off. Or even make up a new name.

I'm not too familiar with how these things work in today's monarchy, but I don't think he would. If the original Arthur really existed as a specific individual, he far predated the existence of England itself as a unified entity, and ruled over culturally native Britons rather than Anglo-Saxons or 'Anglo-Saxified' populations. And the UK monarchy traces its lines back to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms as well as Scotland. Also it seems that king names that occurred after the House of Normandy took power would have been regarded as "the first" even if there had been kings with the same name before. The one that stands out on the list of monarchs is Edward Longshanks who ruled from 1272-1307. He's considered "Edward I" even though there were three previous King Edwards ("King(s) Edward?").

I'm certainly not a royal expert, but an article I read recently said they can choose from any of their given names. (Of course, the same article said he was going to choose King George, so take that into consideration when assessing the reliability of the source! )
